What is Communication? Sharing of information between two or more individuals or groups to reach a common understanding. 9/23/2015

Factors in Communication we need to consider Mass: The number of people receiving the message. One, two or many Audience: The person or people receiving the message can also affect the message. 5 year olds or university students Native speakers or not Friends, associates or public Method/Channel: How the communicator shares his or her message has an important effect on the message itself. person-to-person, telephone, , blog, youtube, facebook, public presentation, television 9/23/2015

How Do We Communicate? We communicate in three major ways: Spoken: There are two components to spoken communication. Verbal: This is what you are saying (content) Para-verbal: This is how you say it – your tone, speed, pitch, and volume. Non-Verbal: the gestures and body language that accompany your words. Written: Communication can also take place via fax, , or written word/symbol 9/23/2015

Cultural Barriers People may speak the same language, but are from a different culture, where different words or gestures can mean different things. –Slang is part of Australian vocabulary Perhaps the person you are communicating with has a very different lifestyle. All of these things can effect your ability to get your message across the way you intended. 9/23/2015

Para-verbal Communication Skills Try saying these three sentences out loud to the person next to you. Place the emphasis on the underlined word. “I didn’t say you were wrong.” (mono-tone) “I didn’t say you were wrong.” (Implying it wasn’t me) “I didn’t say you were wrong.” (Implying I communicated it in another way) “I didn’t say you were wrong.” (Implying I said something else) 9/23/2015

The Strength of Speed The pace at which you speak also has an important effect on your communication ability. Speed also has an effect on the tone and emotional quality of your message. One easy way to check your pitch, tone, and speed is to record yourself speaking. 9/23/2015

Communicating with Body Language Think about the way that you stand and sit Sitting hunched over typically indicates stress or discomfort. Leaning back when standing or sitting indicates a casual and relaxed demeanor. Standing ramrod straight typically indicates stiffness and being nervous. The position of you hands, arms, legs and feet Crossed arms often indicate a closed mind. Fidgeting is usually a sign of boredom or nervousness. 9/23/2015

Facial Expressions Smiles and frowns speak a million words –1 st impression A raised eyebrow can mean curiosity, or disbelief. The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said. Peter Drucker 9/23/2015
