Emerging Technologies Committee: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee Report John Vian for Jack Agee, Chair Joe Koo, Deputy Chair January 5, 2011 The 49th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Orlando, Fl

We welcome three new members to the M&S Subcommittee: Dan ONeill – Northrop Grumman Eric Malroy – NASA Johnson Space Center Vicki Johnson – Cessna Aircraft Company ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

New watch list item on: Terahertz Imaging and Communication The continuing limitations on access to the electromagnetic spectrum due to assignment of frequencies to the civilian economy make the newly accessible terahertz frequencies a potentially valuable asset. Special characteristics offer potential for improved surveillance, communications and imaging in a variety of scenarios. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

Update on Watch List item: Horst Adams, Bayer MaterialScience & Baytubes Baytubes are multi-walled carbon nanotubes that reinforce materials such as aluminum to increase strength and decrease weight. Bayer will be determining the future site for factory in the U.S. for the production of Baytubes®. Dr. Adams presented at the CONTACT Annual Review meeting in October and National Space Missile Materials Symposium in June. His presentation is available for public release. Pratt and Whitney has expressed interest in Bayer. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

Dan ONeill submits report on: Prognostic Health Monitoring Centers University of Marylands Prognostics and Health Management Consortium at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering University of Cincinnatis Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems More to follow from Dan ONeill and John Vian on this topic. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

Potential public policy issues for consideration: The U.S. needs a program to compete with Europes $100 million plus program on the Next Generation Wing Technology. Either Air Force, Army, Navy or NASA could lead the effort. A $504 million bill for DoD funding on SBIRs to help fund Phase 3. Northrop Grumman and other primes will be supporting this. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee
