BASIC DRAWING USING A GRID Using a grid is a time honored way to begin to understand how to render what we see. It helps us to train our eyes to see in a different way. After a while you will be able to see the grid in your mind without drawing it. With the grid system you can make your drawings any size that you want just by enlarging the size of the squares in your grid.

Purpose of a grid drawing When artists need to enlarge an image they often use a grid. This grid enables the artist to identify details in a block and place them properly on the page. Once completed, all the blocks of the grid form the larger image

Assignment Use a grid to draw a larger version of an image (your computer photograph).

Step 1 Draw a 1/2" grid on your image.

Step 2 Fold large sheet of drawing paper in half and crease the fold.

Step 3 On the inside sheet of paper draw a 1" grid. Have the same number of squares in each direction as the grid on your image has. 3x4 = 9x12

Step 4 Fold the paper again. You can see the grid through the top sheet of paper.

Step 5 Now make a larger copy of your photograph by drawing exactly what is in each square

Materials One 12"x18” sheet of drawing paper- folded ~ Ruler ~ Pencil ~ 3"x4" image (photograph)
