DYING TO LIVE: SOURCE: UNODC JOURNEY OF A MIGRANT FROM SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA TO EUROPE.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW?  According to a report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there are about 214 million migrants in the world today.  This makes up 3% of the world’s population  The movement of this 3% of the world’s population according to the report: ‘is now an essential, inevitable and potentially beneficial component of the economic and social life of every country and region’.

 Migration has been part of human nature.  The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the border of each state and to leave any country including his own and return to his country.’  Africa is the continent that matter most to the EU migration policy makers.

How can this problem be controlled?  ‘Human rights are intimately connected with every step of the migration process – they are often implicated in the reasons why people move; they feature in the treatment that migrants encounter in transit, the issue of their integration in host communities; and the question of return.’ Monette Zard.  Global Approach to Migration & Mobility: A ‘win-win-win’ situation.
