Introduction to Migration EQ: Why do people move? 3/4 and 3/5

Bell Ringer 3/4 Why do people migrate (move)? Give three different reasons why you might move in your life. Where would you go? Why?

Chalk Talk…sshhh-no talking Question: 1. What migrations do you currently know about? 2. Why did these groups of people move? Group 1: Answer question #1 Group 2: Respond to group 1 … create your own questions, or thoughts or add answer to question #2 to migrations on the board Group 3: same as group 2

Read page 58 In your binder, write the definition of the following words: – Migration – Emigration – Immigration – Net migration Write 3 observations from the map. What is the map displaying?

Reflection Write one paragraph about a specific migration (think about the chalk talk). Use all of the words you defined today in your paragraph. (migration, immigration, emigration and net-migration.) If you do not know about a specific migration, you can make up a fictional migration.

EQ: Why do people move? Bell Ringer 3/5 1. What do you think are the major reasons that people leave a place? 2. What do you think are the major reasons that people move to a place? Give examples.

Picture Analysis: 1) Infer what the main idea of the picture below is. 2)Provide two pieces of evidence to justify your interpretation.

So Why do people migrate? This can be answered by understanding the Push and Pull factors (drum roll please….)

Push Factor Definition: Induces (causes) people to move out of their location. Reasons to leave a location.

Pull Factor Induces (causes) people to move into a new location. Reasons to move to a new location

How does this Look? What are the three push/pull factors?

Main Idea/supporting details activity Pages 66 and 67 1)In your notebooks create this model: Topic/heading: Main Idea Sentence: Supporting Detail 1: Supporting Detail 2: 2) For each section, (political, economic and environmental), write the heading, the main idea of the section and 2 supporting details relating to what causes people to move. 3) Use pictures, charts and maps to help you with supporting details. 4) In political section, write the definition of refugees

Think-pair-share Share your main ideas and supporting details with your group/partner. Add/change your answers accordingly Label PUSH or PULL for each of the supporting details.

Reflection/HW Draw a picture that depicts at least 2 different push/pull factors Write a caption or explanation of your drawing.
