STUDENT WILL…  Be able to discuss Ravenstein’s laws of migration  Be able to discuss the gravity model  Be able to discuss push & pull factors of migraiton

LANGUAGE CHECK  Emigrate: Leaving your country for good for another.  Immigrate: Coming to a country.  I shall emigrate from Egypt to immigrate to Iceland.  (I left Egypt and am going to Iceland).

GRAVITY MODEL  Gravity Model: states that spatial interaction is directly related to the populations and inversely related to the distance between them.  Works like gravity:  Things are going to be drawn to the thing with a larger mass.  Distance between the two objects are going to influence their pull  Cities are the “thing” and their “mass” is the population  People are drawn to larger cities, but distance may erode that pull  Will come up again…

RAVENSTEIN’S LAWS OF MIGRATION  1) Every migration flow generates a return or counter- migration.  2) The majority of migrants move a short distance  3) Migrants who move longer distances tend to chose big-city destinations  4) Urban residents are less migratory than inhabitants of rural areas  5) Families are less likely to make international moves than young adults.
