Emerging Technologies Committee: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee Report Dr. Joseph Koo UT Austin Dept. of Mechanical Engineering July 27, 2010 The 46th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit Nashville, TN

The FY 11 SAB recommendation Ultra-light Weight Materials for Aerospace Applications generated by Joseph Koo on behalf of the ETC M&S subcommittee has been submitted and will be reviewed in the summer. Selected topics approved by the Secretary of the Air Force will be posted on the USAF SAB website by the first of the year. Dr. Koo also reports that the National Academy of Science is going to conduct a study on lightweight materials and will be putting together a panel. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

Update on Watch List item: Lightweight, high strength materials - Horst Adams, Bayer MaterialScience and Baytubes Baytubes are multi-walled carbon nanotubes that reinforces materials such as aluminum, delivering lightweight high strength materials. Bayer MaterialScience will be considering manufacturing sites in the U.S. for the production of Baytubes®. Pratt and Whitney has expressed interest in performance data and testing. We provided some information to them from NSMMS. Dr. Adams presented at the National Space Missile Materials Symposium in June. A short version of his presentation is available for public release. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

Horst Adams, Bayer MaterialScience and Baytubes Dr. Adams will be next presenting at the CONTACT Program Annual Review Meeting on October 13, 2010 at Rice University in Houston, TX. This meeting will be in conjunction with the 25 th Anniversary of the Buckyball Discovery Celebration at Rice University. This presents a good opportunity for interaction with Dr. Adams and many others who will be in attendance including representatives from industry, government, and academia. ETC: Multidisciplinary and Systems Subcommittee ETC Emerging Technologies Committee

CONTACT Program Annual Review Meeting CONTACT or Consortium for Nanomaterials for Aerospace Commerce & Technology is a partnership between U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and seven universities in Texas including: University of Texas at Arlington, Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, and Pan American, University of Houston, and Rice University focused on nanotechnology research and commercialization for aerospace and defense sectors. Meeting Date: October 12-13, 2010 at Rice University in Houston, TX. Meeting participants included program members, academia, government and industry. The CONTACT Program Industrial Advisory Committee invites industry representatives to be engaged in the program. Some of the ETC M&S subcommittee members organizations have joined this committee.
