LINEAR MEASUREMENT Allows for Mass Production & for Interchangeable Parts

TYPES OF MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS Metric System: standard for linear measurement is the Meter English System: linear measurement is divided into fractions Decimal: linear measurement is divided into thousands of an inch

What is Linear Measurement? That which can be expressed as a length in fractional decimal or metric system Usually in the form of a straight line Perimeter is a form of linear measurement Is pounds? Is gallons? Is electric current?

Measurement Terminology Actual Size: The measured size of a part. Basic Size: The size from which limits of size are derived. Limits of Size: The maximum and minimum permissible variation of a size Tolerance: The total permissible variation of a size. Fit: The range of tightness between two mating parts. Clearance fit:: Provides clearance between mating parts

Terminology cont. Interference fit: provides interference between mating parts Allowance : Intentional difference between the material size limits of mating parts

TYPES OF RULES Flexible Rules Steel Rules Hook Rule -blind holes, grooves. Slide calipers Combination square
