AIAA Public Policy John C. Rose Deputy Director, Public Policy Region 6 Chair, National Security, Public Policy Sub-Committee Regional Leadership Conference (RLC) Aug 15 & 16, 2013

What is Public Policy??? Individuals and/or groups attempt to shape policy through education, advocacy, or mobilization of interest groups. Public Policy is when… When theres a vacuum of public input, lobbyists usually fill it. But when theres public input, the people usually win. Morgan Carroll – Colorado State Senator Why it is important…

Perspectives on Public Policy and AIAA The most important political office is that of the private citizen. Louis D. Brandeis, Associate Justice, US Supreme Court The time has arrived when engineers will have to venture out from the shelter and comfort of the Ivory Tower and enter the arena of boiling controversy, real-world debate, and -- brace yourselves -- politics. It is no longer viable to place our high-tech candle under a bushel, for at best we will find ourselves in darkness and at worst our bushel will go up in flames. Norman R. Augustine, Retired CEO, Lockheed Martin (Comments at AIAA Summer Meeting, June 16, 1998) Where are the AIAA-sponsored forums through which we can lead public-policy discussions concerning the appropriate balance of funding, direction, and regulation in the new public-private partnerships that are characteristic of todays commercial space endeavors? Mike Griffin, AIAA President, former NASA Administrator April 2012 Aerospace America A Call to Participate!

The Challenges We Are Facing… Budget Control Act (BCA) Sequestration Debt Ceiling Changing Priorities DC Stalemate Social Perception Continuing Resolution (CR)

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs! "Make no mistake, the savings we are proposing will impact all 50 states and many districts across America, Leon Panetta, Sec Def, Jan 2012, Pentagon

How You Can Benefit Networking – Locally, regionally, & nationally Understanding – Learn about how your govt works (or doesnt!!!) Exposure – Industry and government officials Expand – Understand a different side of industry Grow – Career/Development opportunities
