Agenda 1. Logon – Establish the Connection 2. Procedures during CPDLC Operations 3. Contingency Operations In this module, you will logon to an ATC facility, and look at procedures while you are connected.

Required Authorization CPDLC requires Ops spec approval Data link communications with ATC require operations specifications approval.

Pre-flight Preflight procedures include NOTAM reviews for planned and predicted outages affecting CPDLC.

Pre-flight ATC Logon At some locations the flight plan does not become active in the ATC system until the aircraft departs. When logging on at these particular locations, the ATC COMM ESTABLISHED message does not appear until after departure and the logon process halts after the ACCEPTED message appears. If this situation is known to exist, the logon process may be initiated at around 10,000 feet during climb out. You can log-on during pre-flight on the ground. If the logon is to occur preflight, it can usually be initiated up to 30 minutes prior to departure. You may have to take-off with the “ACCEPTED” message at some locations. In this lesson, we won’t logon during pre-flight.

CPDLC/ADS Operations There sure are a lot of buttons Just tell me which one to push There sure are a lot of buttons You’ve taken off and are approaching a CPDLC area, so let’s get started.

Check Logon Procedures If no specific instructions exist for a given CPDLC area, then the logon should generally be performed between 15 and 45 minutes prior to entering the CPDLC airspace. The local AIP or regional data link documentation should be checked for any specific ATC logon procedures for the location. For example, some airports close to an FIR boundary may require the logon to occur to different ATC Centers depending on the direction of the flight and whether the logon occurs prior to or after departure.

Finding the ICAO FIR Identifiers The four-character ICAO FIR identifier for an ATC Center is listed on the appropriate Jeppeson chart.

Enter the Logon information Note the FLT NO automatically inserts the information from the FLT NO entered on the Route Page during pre-flight. Normally, enter N767A in both the FLT NO and TAIL NO fields You push the ATC key, and enter the Logon information. Once all three fields are filled in, the send prompt appears on the right side of the page.

Sending the Logon When the ground system responds to the logon, the ACCEPTED indication appears. You still are not logged in though (No CPDLC connection exists). Once ACCEPTED the connection should happen automatically though.

Completing the Logon process Oops Note: At this point ensure that the flight number and the active center are both correct. If one or both are incorrect, then the key adjacent to "ATC COMM SELECT OFF" should be pressed to terminate the connection and the logon process recommenced. This completion with the ground station should happen automatically with most ATS systems.

Disconnecting & Re-logon EGGX Since that last logon was not to our liking, first we select off the ATC COMM to disconnect. Then we re-enter the logon information and send it again.

Wait for Datalink established This is looking good now.

Alert message The EICAS comm message indicates that there is an ATC message on the CDU scratchpad

Mission Accomplished Select the ATC key to verify connection to the correct center.

Check for ADS – C connection Ensure that ADS indicates active (ACT). This means position reports are being sent automatically to the ATC facility. If it is not active, you need to manually send the report to ATC, or make position reports via HF.

Setting the Message Latency Timer If the ATC Service Provider requires the use of the message latency timer (usually only in domestic airspace operations) then shortly after the logon has been completed the ground system will send a free text uplink with the required timer interval for you to enter into the Latency Timer field.

Initial Voice (VHF) Check-in with ATC Example: Gander radio, N767A C-P-D-L-C, Shanwick next request SELCAL check EQDF. Example: Gander radio, N767A C-P-D-L-C, SCROD VALIE, request SELCAL check EQDF. A reference manual titled “Guidance Material for ATS Data Link Services in North Atlantic Airspace”, located in the aircraft library, contains phraseology for initial radio contact. Note this information is in the Guidance Material for ATS Data link Services in North Atlantic Airspace.

Data Link Terms State A-D-S when only ADS (automatic) waypoint reporting is active State F-M-C when connected to ATC with data link only State C-P-D-L-C when connected to ATC with both ADS and data link. There are three levels of Data link; ADS (automatic) waypoint reporting only, data link connection only and both data link connection and automatic waypoint reporting. You need to advise ATC on initial check-in, what level of data-link currently is in use. Let’s look at how to tell which is appropriate.

Identifying Data Link Status CPDLC It’s all working Send/Receive data messages, need to also manually send ATC position report as required FMC No data messages available, position reporting automatic WPT You use the two LOGIN / STATUS pages to determine which level of data link to report to ATC.

Non-Flight plan Waypoints When ADS-C is active, do not insert extra waypoints in the FMC for the ADS portion of the flight.

Updating a Waypoint Estimate When it is necessary to update a waypoint ETA you can send a free text message in the form of: Revised ETA [position] [time].

Crossing waypoint Send Position Report Send ACARS (Company) report. Recall that if ADS is not active, then Send ATC report also. Don’t forget to log the 10 minute position check also.

Approaching FIR boundary The next center should appear automatically.

Data Authority CPDLC uses the concept of Data Authority. There can only be two Data Authorities (maximum of two ATS units) connected to the aircraft for CPDLC at any one time, with only one of these connections (Current Data Authority) being active. Unlike Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS), CPDLC requires flightcrew interaction. Gander Oceanic Area Control Centre Operations Building You must be aware of which ATS unit has the active connection and also the hand-off from one ATS unit to another. Workload and integration with other tasks will be critical to situational awareness.

Crossing FIR Boundary Ensure that the next FIR becomes active. If it does not, then re-logon.

Receiving Data link Message If you receive a message from ATC, then open the status page and read the message. Remember to Accept , Reject or Standby any open message.

Data link message accepted The message is no longer Open.

ATC Log Check the ATC log for message history as required.

ATC Connection Loss Notify the controller of the lost connection using voice communications and then send a new logon request. If the data link connection with ATC is terminated for any reason an ATC COMM TERMINATED message appears in the scratchpad.

Data Link Connection Failure Note: At this point, the ATC data link connection is still active. Any downlinks will be sent when the connection is automatically restored. If the data link connection is lost as a result of losing the VHF and SATCOM communication links, a DATALINK LOST message appears on EICAS.

Data Link Non-Normal Conditions Summary The system has lost communication (SATCOM or VHF) (Datalink temporarily lost) Equipment failures such as the ACARS computer (Datalink system failed) There are two EICAS messages associated with the data link system. In either case, the data link is not in contact with the ground station and you will be disconnected (ATC COM TERMINATED) if transmissions fail to resume within 16 minutes.

You Just Lost Cabin Pressure You have just experience a rapid decompression. You decide the most expeditious method to notify ATC is through CPDLC.

Complete 2 Pages Before Sending Verify information, add free text (as req.) and send Generate the report by selecting the appropriate conditions then select verify Only the conditions you select appear in the verify emergency page. If you enter souls on board, then the fuel remaining appears. Recall, if you send Mayday, then the ADS also goes into emergency mode. Selecting PAN does not put the ADS into emergency mode.

Create Emergency Report We push buttons 1L, 4L, 2R and then 6R to go to verify it is what we want You are descending to 14,000 ft. We have 19 SOB and want to declare and emergency. Note when the airplane altitude is more than 150 ft above the entered altitude, then descending appears in the verify page. After making the selections, we push Verify.

Verify, Add to and Declare the Emergency Here you check the selections before sending. We can also add a free text message describing the emergency. When it looks good, we send it.

Controller Response CPDLC Voice Roger MayDay The controller will acknowledge an emergency report by the most appropriate means (CPDLC or by voice contact).

Contingency Summary You can review the material in the reference manual titled “Guidance Material for ATS Data Link Services in North Atlantic Airspace”.

Exiting CPDLC airspace Finally, when you leave CPDLC airspace, you will see the ATC COMM TERMINATED message.

Wait until the next facility is active You are over the North Atlantic and you get the ATC COMM TERMINATED message. What is the best course of action? Select the best answer Revert to voice communications and notify ATC of the situation and send a new logon request Try another facility Wait until the next facility is active Exit RVSM airspace

If the EICAS DATALINK LOST message appears, then you must always re-logon to the ATC center after the datalink is restored. Select the correct answer True False

How can you put the ADS into emergency mode? Select the best answer Select MAYDAY on the emergency report page Select ADS EMERG “ON” (button 2R) on the LOGON/STATUS page 2 Select PAN on the emergency report page A and B are both correct

You have ATC comm established with Gander and ADS is active You have ATC comm established with Gander and ADS is active. Select the best phrase for initial contact with Gander approaching coast out. Select the best answer Gander radio, N767A FL__ F-M-C, Shanwick next request SELCAL check EQDF Gander radio, N767A FL __ C-P-D-L-C, Shanwick next request SELCAL check EQDF Gander radio, N767A FL __, request SELCAL check EQDF Gander radio, N767A FL __ A-D-S, Shanwick next request SELCAL check EQDF
