Warm-up One partner closes his/her eyes. The other partner chooses an object. Describe the object to the other person WITHOUT mentioning the name of the object. The person with eyes closed can only say, “I need more details!” until they can guess what the object is.

Reading: Food is Good Sometimes, a single event can have a lasting effect on a person’s life. A famous New York chef, Anthony Bourdain, describes a childhood experience with an oyster (a kind of shellfish) during a family vacation in France.

Responding to the text 1. How had Monsieur Saint-Jour’s work affected his appearance? He wore old clothes and his skin was leathery, tanned and windblown.

Responding to the text 2. How do you think Bourdain felt when he first saw the boat? Do you think his feelings changed during the trip? How so? Bourdain was probably excited to go out in the beginning, but later he was hungry. He was definitely excited to be the first in his family to try the oyster.

Responding to the text 3. How do you think Bourdain described the oyster trip when he returned home? Bourdain would describe eating the oyster, because he was proud to be the first to try it.

Responding to the text 4. What did he mean when he said “it tasted of…the future?” Bourdain probably meant that he realized after tasting the oyster that food and adventure together would be important in his life.
