Spyware and Viruses Group 6 Magen Price, Candice Fitzgerald, & Brittnee Breze

Spyware What Does It Do? Tracks online movement and searches for information stored on a computer. Slows performance Cause setting changes Malicious software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer’s operation without the consent of the user.

Viruses What Does It Do? Slow performance Corrupt and destroy files Causes application failure A self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents.

Two Types of Viruses Non-Resident Immediately infects host and targets new hosts during application Resident Lies in the background without causing immediate infection Finds new hosts without affecting the application

What’s the Difference? Spyware Does not self replicate Exploits infected computers for commercial gain Monitors web browsing activities Aids in Identity Theft (key logger) Viruses Self replication Has capability of destroying hardware Spreads easily (Worm)

Prevention Software has been developed to prevent problems caused by Spyware and Viruses that scans the computer’s files and drives using a database of virus “signatures” as a comparison.
