Inequalities of Gender and Age Chapter 10

Sex and Gender Identity Behave a certain way based on gender (male or female) Is gender biology or socialization? Society assigns roles as “masculine” or “feminine”

3 Theories on Gender 1. Functionalist 2. Conflict 3. Symbolic Interaction

1.Functionalist: Male and female roles exist because they benefit society -We know what to do- no confusion -Traditional roles are changing today and causing dysfunction (Dads stay home, more divorces)

2. Conflict: Why do gender differences exist? -traditional roles are outdated -traditional roles no longer fit our technological society

3. Symbolic Interaction: How do we learn gender? -Parents -Child Care -School

Gender Inequality Women face prejudice and discrimination (SEXISM)

Age Inequality Low regard for older people Discrimination and prejudice is justified - AGEISM

3 Theories of Ageism 1.Functionalist 2.Conflict 3.Symbolic Interaction

1.Functionalist: treated according to the role they play in society -older people cannot physically do as much and become less important

2. Conflict: Elderly people compete with other age groups for money, food, and jobs

3. Symbolic Interaction: Negative actions and attitudes of older people are products of socialization -We hear others make fun of elderly

Inequality in Elderly Population Elderly live in poverty Power is held through politics- voting and interest groups –Social Security –Medi-Care
