Symbolic Interaction Theory is the study of the self-society relationship as a process of symbolic communications between social actors. This is an exchange of gestures that involves the use of symbols. Based on three assumptions: 1. Communication occurs through the creation of shared significant symbols, 2. The self is constructed through communication, and 3. Social activity becomes possible through the role- taking process.

Social Construction Theory Truth is relative to function and perception Participates in PostModern thinking The self is a product of social processes Competing truths exist internally and externally of the self, family and marriage

Family Development Theory Focuses on roles and function Focuses on how those roles and functions change over time Focuses on how those roles and functions respond and react to crises Focuses on the processes of change

Feminist Theory Theory of power and who holds the power and how that power is achieved. Gender relationships Hierarchical structure Patriarchy Female defined in relationship to the male Critique of patriarchal forms of hegemony. Highlights gender relations and gender inequality as determinant of social interaction and social institutions. Emphasizes gendered patterns Argues gendered inequalities are not natural but socially constructed
