Chinas History (PG ) For centuries –until the early 1900s-rulers known as emperors or empresses governed china. A dynasty, or a line of rulers from a single family, would hold power until overthrown… Who can we compare an emperor or an empress to?

As china developed they tried to keep out foreign invaders from the north by building the Great Wall of China.

Video time…

The Chinese begin to think… They believed that learning was good behavior. About 500 B.C. a thinker named Kongfuzi or Confucius taught that people should be polite, honest, brave and wise. Do you think these are all good or bad qualities one should posses?

Confucius once said. What you do not want done to yourself, do not unto others? What does this quote mean to you, and why is it a good rule to live by? Another famous thinker name Laozi taught Daoism, he taught that people should live simple and in harmony with nature.

After WWII the nationalist became head of the government and in 1949 the communist party took complete control. In a communist country, does the government have limited or unlimited power?

In 1976 Deng Xiaoping took over. Although he allowed economic freedom, for example a free economic enterprise, but he denied politcal freedom. In 1989 students protested, calling for democracy, and he sent out troops that killed hundreds of protestors and arrested thousands more. He denied them their human rights. What bill of right do we have in the U.S.A that allows us to protest?

China has also been criticized for taking control of Tibet. The Dalai Lama, the Buddhist leader in Tibet, now lives in exile in India. Someone in exile, is unable to live in his or her own country because of political beliefs.
