Review Hitler had already begun to take land but he didn’t want to take land that would make the Soviet Union go to war with Germany.

Non-Aggression So, Hitler signed a non-aggression treaty with Stalin. They agreed to not go to war with each other.

Why did the Soviet Union sign the treaty? The army didn’t feel ready to fight ANOTHER war. They were hurt VERY badly during WWI.

Review: Road to War (1932-1939) Election of 1932 Remilitarize (1935) Invasion of Rhineland (1936) Union with Austria (1938)

Review: Road to War (1932-1939) Czechoslovakia and Munich Conference (1938) 1. Appeasement Policy F. Non-Aggression Pact (1939) Invasion of Poland (1939) 1. The war begins

Quick Victory on the Western Front Sept 1, 1939- Hitler invaded Poland 2 days later, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany.

The Allies Great Britain and France were on the Allies. Many other countries joined the Allies against Germany.

Germany continued to win land Denmark Luxembourg The Netherlands Belgium Norway

France lost to Germany too! In June, 1940 http://www.solarnavigator.net/history/explorers_history/Adolf_Hitler_Paris_1940.jpg

Germany TRIED to take over Great Britain Air-bombed British cities

But the British air-force had radar! http://www.aefreemart.com/uploaded_images/radarScreen-719485.jpg

They knew where German planes were and could shoot them down. http://muggingisblissful.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/7.jpg

The British leader: Winston Churchill Helped encourage people to not give up and to believe that Great Britain would defeat the Germans.

Great Britain won! Because the British people didn’t give up And the air-force was able to shoot down German planes…. Great Britain defeated the Germans!

The Eastern Front After 2 years of fighting, Hitler broke his treaty with Stalin. July 27, 1941- Hitler invaded the Soviet Union The Soviet Union joined the Allies

The Soviet Union lost millions of soldiers BUT they were able to defeat the Germans in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942.

Why were the Soviet Union soldiers able to defeat the Germans? 1. The Germans weren’t prepared (ready) for the harsh Soviet winter. Tanks and weapons didn’t work in extreme cold. http://fc09.deviantart.com/fs23/f/2008/022/a/5/Classical_russian_winter_by_doberman4ik.jpg
