Introduction Government of India established the Department of Space in 1972 to promote development and application of space science and technology for socio-economic benefits. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is the primary agency under the Department of Space for executing space programmes. During the seventies, India undertook demonstration of space applications for communication, broadcasting and remote sensing; designed and built experimental satellites – Aryabhata, Bhaskara, APPLE and Rohini – and experimental Satellite Launch Vehicles – SLV-3 and ASLV.

Recent success Today, India has established space systems that form an important element of the national infrastructure. India successfully sent its Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft to moon in November 2008 and became the fourth individual country to send a probe to the lunar surface

Type of satellites INSAT/GSAT For telecommunication, Broadcasting (TV, Radio), Business Communication, Mobile Communication, Tele-education, Telemedicine, Search & Rescue, Satellite Navigation. INSAT 3A Disaster Management Support, Village Resource Centres.

Types of satellite(contd..) IRS Natural Resources Management Natural Resources Information System. RESOURCESAT-2 To find the resources such as Water, Forest, Crop, Land, Minerals Environment.

Types of launch vehicles The types of launch vehicles are SLV ASLV PSLV GSLV Of all of these launch vehicles PSLV and GSLV are the successful ones.

PSLV PSLV stands for Polar Satellite launch vehicle. PSLV is the most successful launch vehicle of ISRO. Nearly all of the satellites are launched with the PSLV. On april 2008, it launched 10 rockets at once and created record.

GSLV GSLV Stands for Geo- synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. It places the satellite in the geo- stationary orbit. India is currently working in this type of launch vehicles. It has the capacity to launch satellites weighing 5 tones.

Other Space Projects Chandrayaan I & II which is our own mission to moon exploration. Mangalyaan a spacecraft mission to explore the mars. ISRO is also working to create a new GSLV rocket with its indigenous technology. Working in the area of reusable space crafts
