Volcanoes

What is it??

It is... an opening, or rupture, in the Earth's surface or crust, which allows hot melted rock, volcanic ash and gases to escape from below the surface.

Why does it look like a mountain? 1. Magma chamber 2. Bedrock 3. Conduit (pipe) 4. Base 5. Sill 6. Branch pipe 7. Layers of ash emitted by the volcano 8. Flank 9. Layers of lava emitted by the volcano 10. Throat 11. Parasitic cone 12. Lava flow 13. Vent 14. Crater 15. Ash cloud

Because melted rock of the past explosions became solid and gave the volcano the shape of a mountain.

Volcanoes in Italy

Il Vesuvio

Vesuvio Vesuvio is a mountain shape volcano in the Gulf of Naples it is not currently erupting, it is sleeping Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that destroyed of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. They were never rebuilt. The towns' locations were rediscovered in the 18th century.

Explosions From 79 B. C. up to 1944 There has been no eruption since 1944, and none of the post-79 eruptions were as large or destructive as the Pompeian one.

Other Volcanoes The two other major active volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on the islands of Sicily and Stromboli respectively.
