PRESENTATION PAPER ON SMALL SCALE IRRIGATION TECHNIQUES ABOUT IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE IN UGANDA BY BYARUHANGA K. GODFREY (COUNTERPART STAFF SIAD PROJECT) 16 th April 2009

CURRENT SITUATION OF IRRIGATION INFRSTRUCTURE Based on irrigation schemes, most of the few existing irrigation schemes need to be rehabilitated

Components of irrigation infrastructure Water source ( Water reservoir, lake, river, spring, wells, borehole) Water conveyance system from source to field (canals or pipes) Water abstraction (diversion structures, weirs, turnout, vertical check gates and gates) Facilitating equipment (water pumps, siphons, sprinklers, micro-jets, drippers)

Components of irrigation infrastructure cont. Energy dissipating structures (drops, cutes, stilling basins and pressure regulating valves Structures (farm roads, bunds, culverts) Field Drainage system

Design procedure Field survey Production of topographical map Irrigation layout plan

JICA DEMO SITE

Small scale gate and turn-out in Bugiri

Irrigation structures in Uganda

Lateral drain joining main drainage canal at Doho irrigation scheme

Shapes of structures

Irrigation structures in Egypt Irrigation canal in EgyptElectric water pump in Egypt Drip lines with drippers

Water reservoir

CHALLENGES Lack of maintenance culture Lack of equipment Erratic weather conditions Lack of adequate data on rainfall Funding problem River bank erosion

ACTION PLAN Development of water harvesting technologies -Potential sites identification basing on topography and run-off capacity -Soil profiles Training; Farmers, contractors Rehabilitation of existing schemes
