MTV World Tour

MTV reaches the most homes in which region? The United States Asia Europe Japan Russia Asia! Second highest is Europe and the US is third.

Syncretism and Cultural Convergence  Syncretism: The development of a new form of culture trait (distinguishing feature of regular occurrence within a culture like the use of chopsticks) by the fusion of two or more distinct parental elements. E.g.: Sikhism (religion) developed in the Punjab area of northwestern India in the late 15th Century AD – elements of Hinduism and Islam combined

 Cultural convergence: The tendency for cultures to become more alike as they increasingly share technology and organizational structures in a modern world united by improved transportation and communication

True or False: MTV is exploding in popularity overseas because young people there want to be like Americans. They are drawn to MTV because it is quintessentially American and watching it allows them to escape completely from their own culture. FALSE. MTV blends American culture with local culture almost everywhere it has been exported. What does this have to do with the concepts of “SYNCRETISM” and “CULTURAL CONVERGENCE”?

Okay, so MTV is an example of globalism in terms of culture. How is it an example of globalism in terms of the world ECONOMY? Reread the second to the last paragraph of the article to see how MTV may be building and selling birdcages before we know it.

WEB QUIZ: WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MTV?
