April 30, 1803: Congress approves the purchase of Louisiana for $15,000,000. This purchase doubles the size of the United States.

June 20, 1803: Thomas Jefferson selects Lewis to lead the expedition. They are instructed to: find the Northwest Passage: a water route across the continent map the area of Louisiana learn more about the land and establish contact with the Native American tribes of the area

1. May 14, 1804: The Corps of Discovery leaves from present-day St. Louis.

2. August 3, 1804: Meeting with Oto and Missouri Indians near present day Omaha. Lewis and Clark distributed peace medals to the tribes. They also traded items including colorful beads and tools.

3. August 20, 1804: Sergeant Floyd dies of burst appendix. He is the only member to die on the expedition.

4. October 24, 1804: They come across the Mandan village. They build Fort Mandan across the river and stay for the winter. Sacagawea gives birth to her son that winter.

4. April 7, 1805: Expedition heads west with Sacagawea, her son, and husband Toussaint Charbonneau.

5. August 12, 1805: Lewis scouts ahead hoping to find the water route to the Pacific. Instead he finds the Rocky Mountains.

6. August 15-17, 1805: The expedition finds the Shoshone tribe. Sacagawea recognizes her brother, the chief. In addition to horses, the expedition receives a guide to help them across the mountains.

7. November 7, 1805: While traveling down the Columbia River, Clark spots the Pacific Ocean. The expedition, including Sacagawea and York, vote on location of winter camp.

March 23, 1806: The expedition leaves Fort Clatsop for a return trip. August 14, 1806: They reach Fort Mandan. September 23, 1806: They reach St. Louis.
