Recall… The first major cause of WWII Happened in 1919 Made Germany very bitter Contained the “War Guilt Clause” It was known as… The Treaty of Versailles

Recall… Another major cause of WWII It started in the United States It happened in 1929 Lots of people lost lots of $ The effects spread out like ripples in a pond This event is known as… THE GREAT DEPRESSION!!!

Let’s Look at Some More Causes This next major cause is a big result of the Great Depression and the Treaty of Versailles. This next major cause is a big result of the Great Depression and the Treaty of Versailles. It is referred to as … It is referred to as … THE RISE OF FASCISM!!! THE RISE OF FASCISM!!!

But, Wait a second, isn’t Fascism bad? Wait a second, isn’t Fascism bad? How could it possibly take hold? How could it possibly take hold? Let’s think for a second and see what we can come up with… Let’s think for a second and see what we can come up with…

Remember, Germany was still VERY BITTER from the TREATY OF VERSAILLE (1919) Germany was still VERY BITTER from the TREATY OF VERSAILLE (1919) Add to those feelings, EMPTY POCKETS caused by the GREAT DEPRESSION (1929) Add to those feelings, EMPTY POCKETS caused by the GREAT DEPRESSION (1929) How do the people of Germany feel? How do the people of Germany feel? What do the people of Germany want? What do the people of Germany want?

New Leadership!!! Who will it be?? Who will it be?? Adolph Hitler!! Adolph Hitler!!

Let’s Look at the Situation in Germany, So We Can Get a Better Understanding Of How This Could Happen!

Conditions In Germany Not Good At All Not Good At All People are angry People are angry Weak Government (Weimar Republic  Result of the Treaty of Versailles) Weak Government (Weimar Republic  Result of the Treaty of Versailles) Inflation and Unemployment (Result of the Great Depression) Inflation and Unemployment (Result of the Great Depression) Strong Leader Desire for a Strong Leader

It’s Campaign Time Adolph rises to the top Adolph rises to the top Makes promises Makes promises Restore the economy Restore the economy Make Germany proud Make Germany proud Plays on the emotions of the people  Germans are the “Master Race” Plays on the emotions of the people  Germans are the “Master Race” Will Adolph fulfill his campaign promises? Will Adolph fulfill his campaign promises?

Adolph as a Leader Rough, but effective!! Rough, but effective!! Authoritarian Control Authoritarian Control Use of Terror Use of Terror Control of Education, Press, and all Media Control of Education, Press, and all Media Uses these as tools of Propaganda Uses these as tools of Propaganda Re-Arms the Military (Violates Treaty of Versailles) Re-Arms the Military (Violates Treaty of Versailles) Restores Pride to the German People! Restores Pride to the German People! Builds a One-Party Government  Totalitarian Builds a One-Party Government  Totalitarian

Why do People Support Hitler’s Regime He brings ORDER AND STABILITY! The Germans wanted a true Kaiser, and they got one

How Does Hitler Keep the People Believing? Multiple Reasons Multiple Reasons Plays on their emotions Plays on their emotions Effectively controls Education and Media Effectively controls Education and Media Provides a steady diet of Propaganda Provides a steady diet of Propaganda Through Education and the Media, Hitler is able to mold the minds of most Germans via an effective propaganda campaign Through Education and the Media, Hitler is able to mold the minds of most Germans via an effective propaganda campaign

Pre-War Propaganda Make note of how the German Propaganda machine depicts the Jewish individual. Notice the exaggerated features of the Jewish face. What is the intent of the artist in terms of using this particular facial expression?

Again, this is and Anti-Semitic poster. Note the way German propagandists make European Jews appear.

This is a recruitment poster for the SS. Notice the features and “look” of the young man in the poster. Recall Hitler’s use of the concept of Aryans Recruitment Posters

This is a poster urging Germans to sign up for the German Airforce. Again, make note of the appearance of the German (“Chiseled” features etc.) Recruitment Posters

This is a recruitment poster for the Hitler Youth Movement. Note the Aryan appearance of the young boy in the picture. More Recruitment Posters

This poster suggests that Germans support Germany and the Nazi Party by purchasing domestically made goods.

This poster advocates the purchase of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”. Recall, children were educated via Hitler’s ideas.

This poster is a map depicting the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which allowed Germany an army of only 10,000, while allowing Germany’s neighbors to go unchecked in terms of military growth.

Wartime Propaganda German wartime propaganda included, but was not limited too: German wartime propaganda included, but was not limited too: Home Front Activities Home Front Activities Industrial Output Industrial Output Scapegoating Scapegoating “Victory” Posters “Victory” Posters Enemy Posters Enemy Posters

This is and anti-Bolshevik poster. Loosely translates to “Bolshevism is Murder”

This poster advocates the purchase of German goods to help the war effort.

This Nazi poster suggests that Germans work hard in industry to supply the Wermacht with munitions and other supplies.

This is a poster for a paper drive. Remember, conservation of materials was a big issue for the Allies and the Axis.

Again, a conservation poster. This one is for a clothing drive.

This is an “Emotion” poster. It appeals to the emotions of Germans to protect the women and children of Germany from the Allied scum!

This poster suggests that Germans be quiet and do not talk about the war effort because the Allies may be listening.

Other Guilty Parties The Nazi’s were not the only users of propaganda as a means of “influencing” the citizens. The Nazi’s were not the only users of propaganda as a means of “influencing” the citizens. Most of the Allied Powers, and the other Axis powers engaged in the same propaganda campaigns. Most of the Allied Powers, and the other Axis powers engaged in the same propaganda campaigns.

These are examples of British propaganda posters calling for citizens to be quiet about the war efforts for fear that Nazi spies might be listening!

These are US examples of “Conservation” Propaganda!

These are examples of “character propaganda”. Designed to make the enemy look a certain way. Much like the Nazi’s did with the Jews

Two of my favorites  These pieces were designed characterize our enemies as monsters that would take our babies.

Bugs Bunny Goes to War! The Indoctrination of Our Youth It seems as if nothing is sacred. Check out this US propaganda campaign!
