1. TOY STORIES Find out what games or toys children played with at any time (eg Meccano, Hornby railway, board games, etc). Use what you discover to recreate the game or to create a manual for the toy (showing how it worked, instructions for how it was played, how much it cost, who played with it, etc.) 2. GREAT DEPRESSION Research what happened during the Great Depression to people in the USA by looking at photos/accounts (eg Dorothea Lange photos.) Make a model of a ‘Hooverville’ shantytown dwelling. In addition, either create a backdrop made up of historic images or look at the music of the period and bring in a song to play {or even create your own!). Explain how it reflects the period. 3. WOMEN AT WAR Research the role of women during WWI and WWII. Look at propaganda posters for the periods and find out what they did. Design your own propaganda poster, based on what you discover, showing the different ways in which women could get involved in the war effort. 4. THE SUFFRAGETTES Find out how the Suffragettes fought to get women the vote. Use the dramatic stories of their actions to create a journalist’s news report sensationalising the events (perhaps representing them as ‘terrorists’ or ‘freedom fighters’). Either record your report as a podcast or create newspaper front page. 5. SOLDIERS OF WWII Research one of the following people and the events they were involved in and choose your presentation style (poem, PowerPoint, diary, letter, etc.): sailor on Atlantic convoy; nurse in North Africa; soldier in Far East; Polish pilot in RAF 1940; German soldier in USSR; American soldier on D-Day 1944; Indian Army soldier 6. FAMILY HISTORY Find out what links your family might have with WWI or WWII. Research this further. E.g. if a relative served in the Land Army, find out how they might have worked, or if someone was an evacuee, find out what it was like. Write an illustrated family history pamphlet based on what you discover or create a webpage/presentation. 7. HOME FRONT Research rationing and food during WWI or WWII. What foods did people have and not have? Cook a typical rationing meal/food item. Remember to provide evidence of your work for the teacher (video, picture or taster!). Alternatively, create a restaurant-style menu but based on rationing. 8. GOOD TIMES Choose a type of popular culture to research (film, radio, music, etc). Find out what people watched, listened to or did for entertainment throughout the period Create a MovieMaker (or similar) presentation using images, captions, voiceover and music to show what you discovered in chronological order. 9. HEROES AND VILLAINS Choose two famous people from the period (one hero and one villain) and research what they did that made them famous. Use your research to prepare a display (poster-style, PowerPoint, etc.) about why they deserve to be remembered as a 20 th Century hero or villain. Year 9 Homework: TWENTIETH CENTURY WORLD (Part A: ) Homework is not always the most appealing aspect of school life. However, it is helpful to your progress and has to be done. The idea behind this project is to make your homework a more creative and enjoyable experience. You get to decide which tasks you do, meaning you can choose activities that best suit the way you like to work or that match the things that you are interested in. You can organise your homework in a way that suits you, so that you can do it when you want to do it. So long as you finish all the tasks before the deadlineS, it doesn’t really matter when you do the activities. You can do it in ten-minute bursts or in two-hour sessions. (Although, a good guide would be about half-an-hour a week.) You must complete 2 tasks – it doesn’t matter which, but try to think about which ones you will enjoy doing the most, what you are good at and what resources you have access to. You may need to use the internet for some of the activities. If you don’t have the internet at home then you can always use the computers in the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) during lunchtime. It is your job to complete the necessary research and decide how to complete each task. However, ask your teacher for guidance if you get stuck in a rut. You can also work with your friends (that’s work with not copy from) if it helps.
