Presentation transcript:

Architectural Manoeuvres in the Dark Leslie Daigle

The IAB: truths Charter: RFC2850 Provides architectural input to the community –workshops & reports –topical RFCs –input on BoFs/WG charters (for IESG consideration) Oversees the IRTF mostly by appointing IRTF Chair, partly in reviewing proposed IRTF RGs IAB does coordinate external liaisons/relationships, though day-to-day liaising happens where it needs to (e.g., WG/AD)

The IAB: myths the IAB is not chartered to manage the IESG the IAB is not involved the IETF standards process administration, except hearing appeals of IESG Actions –IESG manage the IETF standards process the IAB does not have power to approve/reject WG proposals –IESG approve/reject WG proposals

Word on the street… 1. IETF & architecture There are no roadmaps for areas or other large chunks of the architecture, just for WG efforts Too little architectural guidance in the IETF It is impossible to define a single architecture for the Internet

Word on the street…2. darkness Architectural decisions with IETF-wide impact don't get adequate community review It's hard to get a discussion going when the IAB works on architectural considerations Some consider IAB architectural guidelines/question to be "meddling" by "outsiders"

High-level problem statements How to scope out and describe architectural issues that are found? How to do advance architectural work (without creating academic dogma)? Integrating the IAB (an IETF resource) work with the rest of IETF process
