1 STDM Development: Role of UN-HABITAT Presented at Post-conference workshop on the Social Tenure Domain Model: From Concept to Implementation Washington, 11 March 2009

Part of the consortium of partners (see Enemarks presentation)

UN-HABITAT role 1 Developing the conceptual model for STDM with the following underlining principles: Potential addressing security of tenure in vulnerable group both in rural and urban areas Recording and registering the continuum of land rights and records (from informal to formal) System available fro all potential users

UN-HABITAT role 2 Build the partnership: Current four partners with various roles and responsibilities (ITC, FIG, UN-HABITA/GLTN and the World Bank); Other individuals are contributing in the process (e.g. reviewers) More partners will be needed at various phases of STDM development

UN-HABITAT role 3 Seeking potential/new partners including: o Institutions involved in the land administration activities at country level (testing, use, development); o Development partners (e.g. pilot, funding –Sweden Sida funding STDM testing in Kenya-, further development) o Software and systems developers and commercial applications (e.g. further development, pro-poor community of users support); o Local and national governments (e.g. applications)

UN-HABITAT role 4 Hold the copyright o Ensure the product and system are used for public goods o Ensure that when prototype is ready, to be available to all potential users and stakeholders at no fee o Ensure that the core principles and concepts are sustained throughout the product development o Ensure adequate acknowledgement of sources and funding

UN-HABITAT role 5 Funding (seed funding) STDM development o Funding obtained from the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) with support from the government of Sweden (Sida) and Norway… o See funding the prototype development, testing, pilots, evaluation/review o In-kind contribution from UN-HABITAT
