Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:
VISCOSITY The measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. High Viscosity – thick Low Viscosity - thin.

What is a phase change? - when matter changes from one form to another due to the addition or removal of heat.

Melting

Essential Questions: What is melting? How is melting related to the water cycle?

Words to Know

state of matter which holds its shape Solid state of matter which holds its shape

state of matter which takes on the shape of its container Liquid state of matter which takes on the shape of its container

Melt when matter changes from a solid state to a liquid state after being exposed to heat

Melting Point the temperature at which a substance melts (insert thermometer graphic)

Your morning view

What happens next when the temperature goes up?

The sun comes out and the temperature goes up…

Melting in Action

Melting Points Ice: 0 degrees C Popsicles: 0 degrees C Chocolate: 35 degrees C Butter: 50 degrees C Candle wax: 60 degrees C Aluminum: 60 degrees C

What does this have to do with the water cycle? The ice caps in Antarctica are melting. When the ice caps which are solid melt, they provide water, which is a liquid for the water cycle.

Test your knowledge! At what temperature does ice melt? A: Anything over 0 degrees C B: Anything under 0 degrees C C: Anything over 100 degrees C D: Anything under 100 degrees C

Test your knowledge! Melting involves a substance changing from a _________ to a ___________. A: liquid to a solid B: gas to a liquid C: solid to a liquid D: solid to a gas
