1-2 C Continued…

Example 2 Find 8.69  22 Estimate 0. 3 9 5 Place the decimal point. – 6 6 2 0 9 – 1 98 11 Annex a zero and continue dividing. – 110 8.69 ÷ 22 = 0.395; Compared to the estimate, the quotient is reasonable.

Example 3 Emma is purchasing lumber to build a porch. The table shows the cost of the boards. If Emma buys a 12-foot board, how much does it cost per foot?

Example 3 To find the cost per foot, divide $6.48 by 12. 0. 5 4 Place the decimal point. – 6 0 4 8 – 48 The cost of the board is $0.54 per foot.

Example 4 Jack and his sister are sharing the cost of a digital camera. The camera costs $88.50. If Jack saved $50 to buy the camera, how much does his sister have left after paying her share of the camera? Estimate $90 ÷ 2 = 45; $50 – $45 = 5 Step 1 Determine how much Elena will pay for the camera.

Example 4 4 4 . 2 5 Place the decimal point. – 8 8 – 8 5 – 4 1 – 10

Example 4 $50.00 – $44.25 $5.75 $50.00 – $44.25 = $5.75 Elena has $5.75 left.

Five dozen eggs cost $10. 50. Find the cost of one dozen Five dozen eggs cost $10.50. Find the cost of one dozen. How much change will you receive if you pay for one dozen eggs with a five dollar bill? Meg is purchasing lumber to build a porch. The table shows the cost of the boards. If Meg buys a 10-foot board, how much does it cost per foot? 3) 1.25 ÷ 5 $3.90 $0.58 0.25

9/19/2014 1-2 E Divide Decimals by Decimals

To divide a decimal by a decimal, make the divisor a whole number. The amount of places you move the decimal in the divisor move the SAME AMOUNT of places in the dividend

Example 1 Find 5.94  0.2. Move the decimal point so that the divisor is a whole number. 2 9 . 7 Place the decimal point. – 4 Divide as with whole numbers. Move the same amount of decimal spots in the dividend. 1 9 – 1 8 1 4 – 14

Check by multiplying the quotient and divisor Check by multiplying the quotient and divisor. If correct product will match dividend.

Example 2 Find 8.1 ÷ 0.054. 1 5 – 54 27 Write a zero in the ones place of the quotient because 0 ÷ 54 = 0. – 270 Answer: So, 8.1 ÷ 0.054 = 150.

Move the decimal place to make the divisor a whole number. Example 3 Find 0.052  1.3. . 4 Place the decimal point. – 0 Move the decimal place to make the divisor a whole number. 5 – 0 0 5 2 – 52 Answer: So, 0.052 ÷ 1.3 is 0.04.

Example 4 Francisco made $357.25 last week. Erin made $185.30. How many times as much money did Francisco make as Erin? Round to the nearest tenth. Find 357.25 ÷ 185.3. 1 . 9 2 – 1853 1719 5 – 16677 518 – 3706 1474 To the nearest tenth, 357.25 ÷ 185.30 = 1.9. So Francisco made about 1.9 times as much as Erin.
