Functions

The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size. A rule of thumb, 2/3 of body is consists of water, and it is the main component of human body. Did you know that your tissues and organs are mainly made up of water? Here is the %: Muscle consists of 75% water Brain consists of 90% of water Bone consists of 22% of water Blood consists of 83% water

The functions of water in human body are vital. The water: Transports nutrients and oxygen into cells Moisturizes the air in lungs Helps with metabolism Protects our vital organ Helps our organs to absorb nutrients better Regulates body temperature Detoxifies Protects and moisturizes our joints

Harmful Effects and Symptoms of Dehydration The Harmful Effects Result from Dehydration: Tiredness Migraine Constipation Muscle cramps Irregular blood pressure Kidney problems Dry skin 20% dehydrated – Risk of death

Symptoms of Dehydration Here are some of the symptoms that you need more water: Dark Urine – Dark Yellow or Orange in Color: Urine is generally pale yellow to clear when you have sufficient water intake. Dark color or strong smell indicates that you need to drink more water. Dry Skin: Skin is the largest body organ and requires its share of water. Thirst: Thirst is the most obvious sign that you're already dehydrated. It is always a good practice to drink more water when your are not thirsty, don’t wait until you're thirsty. Hunger: Most people mistake hunger for the indication to eat more, whereas in actual fact, they may be dehydrated. So before you have your meal, grab a glass of water. Fatigue: Water is a source of energy and gives you a boost in energy.

Disease The majority of illness is caused by fecal matter Women Women spend 200 million hours a day collecting water Children Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness

The Facts: 780 million people lack access to an improved water source; approximately one in nine people million people die each year from water, sanitation and hygiene-related causes each year. 8 The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns. 1 People living informal settlements (i.e. slums) often pay times more per liter of water than wealthy people living in the same city. 1 An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country slum uses for an entire day.

Sanitation Diarrhea is more prevalent throughout the developing world largely due to the lower levels of access to safe drinking water and sanitation, along with poorer overall health, hygiene, and nutritional status. 10 Improved sanitation facilities are estimated to result in an average reduction in cases of diarrhea of more than 33%. 10 Sanitation and proper hygiene are crucial to diarrhea prevention. It is estimated that improved sanitation facilities can result in an average reduction in cases of diarrhea of more than one-third. Washing hands with soap has been found to reduce diarrhea by more than 40%. 10

Water Crisis Watch video.... Glass ceilings aside, millions of women are prohibited from accomplishing little more than survival. Not because of a lack of ambition, or ability, but because of a lack of safe water and adequate sanitation. Millions of women and children in the developing world spend untold hours daily, collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, then return to their villages carrying their filled 40 pound jerry cans on their backs.

11 percent more girls attend school when sanitation is available.
