History Samoa was first conquered by Britain and then ruled by New Zealand from 1914 to 1962, when they finally gained their independence. Samoa was explored by the Dutch and the French in the 18th century. In 1914 at the outset of the First World War, New Zealand took control of Western Samoa, replacing Germany as it's colonial masters, and retained it when the war ended under a mandate from the League of Nations.
