You should drink plenty of non- alcoholic fluids Make sure you have a safe air conditioned place to go during the storm to keep cool Listen to the radio for updates on the heat wave If you don’t have a cool place to go you should put air conditioners in your home Put some type of drapes in the windows to keep the sun from getting in, you can also put aluminum foil in your windows to reflect the heat back outside Keep storm windows up all day Put weather strips on your doors so that all the cool air stays inside

Safety During a Heat Wave During a storm you should drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids Make sure to stay in well air conditioned buildings Don’t leave children in a parked car Try to stay out of the sun Don’t dress in heavy thick or warm clothing, try to dress as lightly as you possible can Some symptoms for heat stroke is a body temperature of 106+, hot and dry skin, strong pulse, possible unconsciousness, and not sweating Some symptoms for heat exhaustion is heavy sweating, weakness, skin cold and pale, weak pulse, normal temperature, fainting, vomiting

How heat waves form, and facts about them Heat waves form when an air mass becomes stationary over a region. A heat wave is an extended interval of abnormally hot and usually humid weather, usually lasting from a few days to over a week. In the Eastern United States a heat wave occurs when a high pressure system originating in the Gulf of Mexico becomes stationary just off the Atlantic Seaboard

 The 1995 Chicago heat wave led to approximately 600 heat- related deaths over a period of five days. It is now considered to be one of the worst weather-related disasters in American history.  The 1936 North American heat wave was the most severe heat wave in the history of North America. It took place in the middle of the Great Depression and led to an enormous human and economic toll. The death toll exceeded 20,000 which made it the deadliest natural disaster of the 20 th Century in the United States. Agricultural losses were enormous as well as crops were destroyed by the high heat and lack of moisture.
