April 10, 2014 #IOCprev2014

One request before we start Can you please all turn ON your mobile phones, switch them to silent, but open your Twitter App Now Follow me…… (If you weren’t already doing #IOCprev2014)

“Do”s and “Don’t”s of social media DO join social media and get some expertise in it (or in 10 years time you might find yourself feeling like someone who doesn’t have a driver’s licence or can’t use Microsoft Excel). DO use different platforms for different purposes (e.g. Twitter for sharing links to good articles & papers and PUBLIC comment on issues; Facebook for personal matters; Instagram for posting photos; Linkedin for showing off your CV; Research Gate for showing off your publications) DON’T operate the machinery before you understand the safety manual, especially Twitter – walk (using Facebook) before you try running (Tweeting) Take your public comments very seriously but don’t take comments of others that seriously (see “Trolls”)

Twitter Glossary RT = ReTweet; MT = Modified ReTweet FF = Follow Friday suggestions; SO = Shout Out (to) LOL = Laughing Out Loud; LMFAO = Laughing even more Blue Tick = verified as the real person (not an impersonator) IMO = in my opinion # used either to assist searching #concussion or to group Tweets together #InjPrevConf or for emphasis #notrocketscience LCHF = Low Carb High Fat (LOL)

If you are following….. Please ReTweet There is no ‘IT’ in ‘COKE’ (?OK) but there is ‘IT’ in ‘TWITTER’ #IOCprev2014 #socialmedia

Twitter is public comment The ‘It’ baton in ‘IT’ has been gradually passed from IBM to Microsoft to Google to Apple to Facebook to Twitter. Essential difference between Twitter and Facebook(+most other platforms) is that Facebook requires two-way connections whereas Twitter only needs one-way connections. You might not be Facebook friends with Usain Bolt, but you can follow him on Twitter Anyone can follow you on Twitter, including journalists (who can quote you on the front page of the newspaper) …and Trolls who can call you a f___ing softc___ doctor trying to ruin all sport & create a nanny state (water off a duck’s back), then ask you why haven’t gotten your star player’s hamstring fixed (ouch!)

Publicity if the cause needs it Scenario – Des Hasler (coach) criticised NRL judiciary for a one match suspension given to one of his players who concussed an opposition player Orchard Tweets: “Hasler: stereotype of a win-at-all- costs coach with no regard for welfare of opposition players” Outcome: quoted by multiple newspaper articles, Orchard speaks to Hasler and apologises to him, deletes Tweet but Hasler also clarifies that he doesn’t like to see opposition players concussed Helps lead towards banning of “shoulder” tackles
