Review for Grammar Test #2 January 22, 2014

What will be on this test? Double-negatives Comma rules Types of essays Writing process Punctuation marks Tenses (specifically the present perfect)

Double-negatives Just don’t use them! I don’t have no money. Neither Alyssa nor Brianna weren’t at the party. I didn’t not want to go to the mall. I hardly never heard the bell ring.

Comma Rules #1- Items in a list After school, I plan to make a sandwich, sit down, and watch General Hospital. #2- Separate independent clauses (with a coordinate conjunction) Mary struggled to carry her books down the hallway, and eventually she dropped them.

Continued… #3- Dependent clauses (intros) During the winter, I often get dry skin. #4- Extra information Dr. Aaronson, my kids’ pediatrician, is located in Fredericksburg. #5- Dates and places On June 25, 2014, I moved back to Orange County, Virginia.

Last one! #6- Quotes “Walk quietly to the back of the room,” the professor whispered.

Types of essays Expository- writer answers a question or explains something Informational- writer gives information on a topic Persuasive- writer tries to convince reader to think or feel a certain way Descriptive- writer describes something, focusing on the five senses Narrative- writer tells a story

Writing process Pre-writing- brainstorm and generate ideas, organize your thoughts, do research Drafting- write your first draft Revising- add, remove, move, substitute Editing- capitalization, understanding, punctuation, spelling Publishing/sharing- final verison

Punctuation Marks that indicate a pause Comma- “Wait for me, and I will walk with you.” Period- “I will wash you car. Let’s do it tomorrow.” Ellipses- “I used to know a lot about physics but now…”

Tenses Past, present, future I walked, I walk, I will walk Present perfect tense – Shows that something is continuing to happen in the present – “I have played this game for two years now.”
