Chapter 8 Computer-Based Training Web-based Training: Advantages - - Can deliver training anytime & anywhere Admin is efficient and cheap Self-paced, self-directed instruction Trainee’s learning can be monitored Controlled access to material Easy and cheap to change content

Chapter 8 Computer-Based Training Web-based Training: Disadvantages - - Networks can’t handle big audio and video files Need to control and bill users Hard to “repurpose” linear material to hypermedia

Chapter 8 Computer-Based Training Web-based Training: Rule Categories for development of WBT Development 2. Instructional Effectiveness 3. Learner Control 4. Linkages 5. Sharing

Chapter 8 Intelligent Tutoring Systems Technique: Instructional programs that use artificial intelligence. 3 Types: Tutoring Coaching Empowering

Chapter 8 Intelligent Tutoring Systems Unique because: ITS can match instruction to individual needs ITS can communicate and respond to learners ITS can model trainee’s learning process ITS can base info provided on earlier performance ITS can make decis. about trainee’s competence ITS can self-assess and make modifications

Chapter 8 Distance Learning Technique: Allows two-way communication between geographically dispersed people by two methods- 1. Simultaneous learning by people in class and others via telephone or computer. 2. Individualized computer-based training

Chapter 8 Distance Learning Advantage: Company saves on travel costs

Chapter 8 Distance Learning Disadvantage: Low level of interaction between trainer and trainees

Chapter 8 Choosing New Tech Training Methods Conditions for use: 1. Adequate resources to utilize technology. 2. Dispersed trainees and high travel costs. 3. Trainee comfort with technology. 4. Technology use is part of business strategy and is currently being used by company. 5. Employees can’t attend scheduled pgms. 6. Limited time currently for practice, feedback, & assessment.
