COHI Delivers Outreach Coordinator student placement program

Nice to meet you! I have recently joined COHI as a volunteer. I am a student midwife in Canada, who will be graduating in one years time. I have recently joined COHI as a volunteer. I am a student midwife in Canada, who will be graduating in one years time. Outreach Coordinator Outreach Coordinator –student placement program

Midwifery in Canada –Ontario’s midwifery care model: continuity of care, informed choice, choice of birthplace. –Midwives are part of public health care system in Canada. –Midwives are primary care providers that provide prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care for normal, low-risk pregnancy and birth –Defined scope of practice –Consult as necessary –Hospital admitting privileges

Canadian Midwifery Education Program Model is based on education in New Zealand Model is based on education in New Zealand 4 year degree: direct entry 4 year degree: direct entry Bacc. of health sciences in midwifery Bacc. of health sciences in midwifery 5 universities (3 belong to 1 consortium, meaning one program offered at 3 locations) 5 universities (3 belong to 1 consortium, meaning one program offered at 3 locations) 1.5 years academics only 1.5 years academics only 3 years clinical placement alongside coursework 3 years clinical placement alongside coursework

In our program we have an elective placement that some students choose to do internationally, and it would be great if they chose COHI to facilitate this for them. As I began to explore this program, I found that the current model would not be easily accessed by Canadian Midwifery Education Program students As I began to explore this program, I found that the current model would not be easily accessed by Canadian Midwifery Education Program students

Goal: Create a COHI program ideal for MEP students Leilani, Laura, and I have been brainstorming and coming up with some program ideas that would appeal to MEP students, would be feasible (in financial terms, etc), and that would fit within the vision of COHI. Leilani, Laura, and I have been brainstorming and coming up with some program ideas that would appeal to MEP students, would be feasible (in financial terms, etc), and that would fit within the vision of COHI.

MEP placement Parameters Parameters –4 week elective placement in 3rd year of 4-year degree –Attending births, prenatal, postnatal, well woman, well baby care, clinical skills, condition of women internationally, etc – Approval required from MEP university and student’s insurance (CURIE)

Some ideas Cost Cost – $1000- $1500 USD ?? suggested by me, as I know there are programs available for this price –Important to have something available for a single student –Includes accommodation, food, placement (including local preceptor) –Student pays own airfare, tourist activities, etc –Group prices could be negotiated, and may be cheaper Groups of 4+ might include an American preceptor Groups of 4+ might include an American preceptor

For now… In the mean time I have collected the contact information of the MEP programs in Canada, and when we finalized what we can offer, will be in touch with the universities and their students.
