Comparing Elements, Molecules, Compounds, & Mixtures

Making a Flip Book 1. Fold a piece of paper lengthwise 2. Fold it in half 2 more times the other direction to divide it into 4 equal parts.

Flip Book (cont.) 3. Cut the top flap of each of the four folded creases. Put the words: Element, Molecule, Compound, and Mixture on the front of each flap. 3. Take notes about each chemistry vocabulary word from the following slides. Element Molecule CompoundMixture

Element Each Element is a unique atom made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Examples: O, Fe, Na, Hg, Au, K

Molecule Any two or more atoms bonded together chemically. Includes two or more of the same or two or more different atoms. Water Molecule H 2 O Ozone Molecule O 3 Examples: O 2, H 2, O 3, Cl 2, N 2, NH 3, CO 2, H 2 0, NaCl, CuSO 4, NaHCO 3

Compound Two or more different elements bonded together chemically. All compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds! Water (H 2 O) Table Salt (NaCl) Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) Examples: NH 3, CO 2, H 2 0, NaCl, CuSO 4, NaHCO 3

Mixture Two or more substances combined physically. There is no chemical bond. Examples: Salad Lemonade Humans Trail Mix

What do you think? Determine whether the following are an element, molecule, compound, or mixture: 1. an element

2. Methane Both a molecule and a compound

3. Ice Cream a mixture

4. Spaghetti and meatballs a mixture

5. N 2 a molecule
