Social Issue Project ETHS 2410 Summer 2014 By: Mariyam Muhidin

My Social Issue I became interested in doing my research on black children being raised without a father because of:  Scholarly Articles  Personal Interest/Experience  Media journal  Divorce rate

Scholarly Research The Fatherless Generation From the summary of this article many statistics state that the different causes of children growing in a home without a father can lead to drug use, violence, homelessness, behavioral disorders, school dropouts and other serious issues. This article made me realize the importance of having a father figure in the child’s life. During my intervention I want fathers to realize the outcomes when they’re not involved in their child’s life.

Scholarly Research Children Are Better Off With a Father Than Without One According to this article it state that, girls whose fathers are involved in their life wait longer to initiate sex and have lower rates of teen pregnancy and are likely to have healthier relationships with boys. It gave me an idea for my intervention to bring someone to share their feelings of growing up without a father figure.

Scholarly Research Benefits of Children Growing Up With Biological Parents.“ Black children growing up in the presence of both biological parents have lots of benefits than those growing with single parent or step or cohabiting families. Through their biological parents, they have the access to a vast network including grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, friends of the family, and work colleagues. In this article gave me ideas to have a after school program which will include activities, games, sports, and music.

Intervention What is it? Afterschool program “ Dad’s Club” Sports, arts and crafts, dance club, cooking club. Who would be involved/participate? The fathers, kids, and someone to share their story. What is the goal? To get the fathers involved in their child’s life. How much would it cost? Free for All

Resistance to the Intervention  Father’s work schedule  Fathers who are lazy  Temporary fathers  Young fathers

Support for the Intervention  I might get support from fathers, kids, teachers, mothers, and YMCA.  Because I would assume they will know the importance of having a father figure in the child’s life.  This link supports the impact of not having a father figure.

Impact of Intervention  I would love to see positive influences within the community because it will show the new generation of having a father being there will make a difference.  Getting the father involved in the child’s after school programs will decrease the possibilities of the child’s issues in the future.  I believe black youth should be encouraged to pursue a degree to help them work toward a successful profession. Those youths are more likely to come back to their communities and provide a positive influence.
