Character Foils Ana, Myrtil, Lorenzo

-Both dads are dead -Late King Fortinbras killed by King Hamlet -Late King Hamlet murdered by Claudius -Both want revenge; Avenge their fathers -“Now, Sir, Young Fortinbras of unimproved mettle hot and full hath in the skirts of Norway here and there shark’d up a list of lawless resolutes…to recover of us by strong hand, in terms compulsatory, those foresaid lands so by his father lost.” Act 1, Scene 1 (Horatio) -Thrones stolen from both: -Fortinbras’ uncle king of Norway instead of him -Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle King of Denmark FORTINBRAS ACT 1

-Hamlet encounters Fortinbras’ army that is set to attack worthless small piece of Polish land -Hamlet disapproves of all these people slain for no reason, but at the same time admires his ability to take action. -“How stand I then to have a father killed, a mother stained, excitements of my reason and my blood and let all sleep? While to my shame I see the eminent death of twenty thousand men” Act 4, Scene 4 (Hamlet) -In turn this motivates Hamlet to take action (kill Claudius) -“Oh from this time forth my thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth.” Act 4, Scene 4 (Hamlet) FORTINBRAS ACT 4

-Laertes can go to school by permission of his father; Hamlet is not allowed to go to school, restricted by his Uncle -“Have you your fathers leave? What says Polonius?” Act 1, Scene 2 (Claudius to Laertes) -“And we beseech you bend you to remain here in the cheer and comfort of our eye.” Act 1, Scene 2 (Claudius to Hamlet) -Laertes has a father; Hamlet does not have a father LAERTES ACT 1

-Hamlet has killed Polonius, and doing so creates a foil in Laertes, since they are both fatherless and seeking revenge because of it. -Hamlets indecisiveness on killing Claudius foils Laertes lack thereof. -“To cut his throat i’ the church” Act 4, Scene 7 (Laertes) -Hamlet was unable to kill Claudius while he was praying fearing that he would go to heaven, while Laertes evidently disregards this. -Does Laertes want Hamlet to go to heaven or hell, or does he just want him dead? -Laertes gained respect for being so decisive and taking action, unlike Hamlet -“…’Laertes shall be king:’ Caps, hands, and tongues, applaud it to the clouds” Act 4, Scene 5 (Gentlemen) LAERTES ACT 4

-The player responds emotionally the fictional story of Hecuba (which parallels Hamlets own story); Hamlet cannot produce these emotions to a real life situation. -“Had he the motive and the cue for passion that I have?...He would drown the stage with tears…yet I a dull and muddy-mettled rascal, peak like John-a-dreams, unpregnant of my cause and can say nothing.” Act 2, Scene 2 (Hamlet) THE PLAYER ACT 2

-Hamlet asks Horatio to watch Claudius for a response to the play. He asks Horatio to do this because he will not be swayed by passions and is level headed unlike Hamlet. “Her election hath sealed the for herself, for thou hast been as one, in suffering all that suffers nothing– a man that fortunes buffets and rewards hast taken with equal thanks…give me that man that is not passion’s slave and I will wear him in my hearts core…as I do thee.” Act 3, Scene 2 (Hamlet) HORATIO ACT 3
