In the beginning… The first Rotary club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris. Rotary Founder Paul Harris The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary. The other three original members were Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele and Hiram Shorey.
Today! Rotary is an organization of business and professional men and women united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
Today - Rotary is an International Organization There are over 530 districts and over 1.2 million members in over 165 countries. Arlington Heights Sunrise Rotary Club is in District 6440 which is comprised of 72 clubs with over 3000 members as of July The district covers North Eastern Illinois and consists of portions of Cook, DuPage, McHenry, Lake, and Kane Counties.
Rotary International is now governed by a president and a board of directors elected from all over the world. Annually each district elects a district governor But each club is automous Rotary International President John Kenny (Scotland) Rotary District 6440 Governor
Rotary District 6440 is our Rotary District District 6440 is in Zone 27 which contains 11 districts and over 34,600 members There are over 1.2 million members worldwide The Rotary’s International headquarters is in Evanston!

Service Above Self Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose. The first service project was public restrooms in downtown Chicago, IL, USA. Rotary became the world’s first “service club”.
