Archives & History Why does Zonta have an Interest in our history and archives? ZI’s 100 th BIRTHDAY – 2019 !!

ZI GOALS To Create: A centennial history Program of events celebrating ZI’s 100 th anniversary in 2019 Potential public relations and membership tools

“Zonta International Centennial History” an author will be drawing upon archives sourced from districts around the world.

From The Early Days To Current Times

Documenting our D10 Heritage To raise and maintain historical records, archive and prepare for possible publication at the district level ZI recommended : - district historian - district archivist D 10 decided on a team approach

District 10 Archives/History Team Laura Gilmore, Area 3 Connie Stierstorfer, Area 1 Carolyn Phillips, Area 2

Our Clubs and District History Usually archival material is used a basis for writing a history Some clubs have archives (i.e. SA) Some clubs have written history (done from memory & records) Some clubs have “files” in different places & don’t know where they are

Simple Do’s & Don’ts Don’t keep everything! SELECT Take good care of the records Collect and document before it gets thrown away or the memory is gone.

ZI Resources Materials for district and club archivists and historians on the ZI website: How to Record an Oral History for your Club or District Archives Tools for District and Club Historians Forms for reports Resources

Keeping the Selected Stuff Safe

Formal Archives for D 10 ?? Potential for District 10 to establish formal archival storage at the University of Houston. Material would be stored in proper archival condition and be accessible for review and copying by us and historical researchs.

Action: ORAL HISTORY 1.Identify some of your early club members and talk to them –even if no longer members. 2.We will provide a sample script for consistency 3.Digital/video record if possible 4.One idea – have younger members do the interviewing, Both will enjoy & learn! 5. Details on “how” coming soon!

Example: CP Incomplete Memories Brownsville Conference –late 70’s Program fuzzy/Mattie Hargis, Gov. M&M’s campaign for NOLA members Mary and Millie running for office Bus to Matamoras, Mexico Club event Buying dresses from M member shop Lots of vanilla came back on the bus Made me want to come back for more!

Member oral interviews Do you remember when you first heard about Zonta? When did you join Z? Where ??? Who asked you to join? Why did you decide to join? What special memories do you have about your local club? Any special memories of District Conferences?

Member oral interviews Tell us about your professional career Did Zonta have any impact on your career? What special memories do you have about the District or ZI? Where there any specific club projects you were proudest of? Any ZI projects you thought great?

Member oral interviews If you attended an International Convention – any special memory? Did you ever serve as an officer? If yes, in what capacity? Do you have special photos or other mementos you could share with us? Did you form special friendships?

Member oral interviews Any unique memories of special people like Amelia Earhart Fellows, speakers, etc. ? What do you plan to do with your Zonta memorabilia? [Please consider including items in your will to help your club preserve ZI memory]

What’s Next for District 10 The District Archives/History Team will be in touch! Think about what your club can do. Appoint focal point(s) Contact me if questions/ideas:
