Positioning WRRA Meeting 7/4/14

What are teams trying to achieve? Teams – On Attack Create Space Quick Ball/Control Gain line – On Defence Ball Disrupt/Slow down Close space Not over commit – Referees Ball delivery Position for next phase Accurate decision

Positions 3 Positions – Flat attack – Jockey – Defence

Positions Split 4 groups Flat attack/Jockey/Defence/Lineouts – Describe – When to use it – Positives – Negatives – 3 x phases to show the class

Flat attack 80% of game Attacking last feet Primary to secondary Good – See breakdown and control – Arrival – Control D – Easy exit Bad – Caught if go blind – Can only use when between 15m – If too close rush out or caught 2

Jockey ONLY as transition Should be able to touch 9 Good – Shows reading game easy get ball in line – Get blind side quick – Control both D – 100% ball visibility – Out of way Bad – Caught behind players – Perception of entry 9

D Line In defensive line (slightly behind so not creating hole) Only use once ball won Good – Out of way – Easy to get to next break down – Quick ball/no contest – Goal line – Caught ahead of play – Watch players come towards Bad – Caught if go to early – Lose sight of tackle

Lineout Depends on context of game/conditions/team tactics/field position Hooker – Can control non thrower – See not straights and infringements – Presence – Caught behind players/kick Back middle – Great vision – Time and space 5/7 5m Lineout on defence

Considerations Positioning on field – In goal – 15m – Open or blind side – Common plays by team – Set piece vs general play

Summary When would/could you use each position ? Flat Attack: It is probably the most common position and great for tackle management when the ball is 'contestable' (especially if play is between the touch line and the 15m). It is also great for managing the offside lines and fringes Jockey: When there is a contest over the ball and the tackle occurs within the 15's. Defensive: When the ball is won and there is no contest over the ball i.e. quick ball or if the breakdown occurs near the goal line. If there is still a contest over the ball and you are in the ‘D’ line – YOU ARE IN THE WRONG POSITION !
