Direct object pronouns : me, te, le, la, nous, vous, les

Direct objects are the people or things in a sentence that receive the action of the verb. To find the direct object in a sentence, ask the question Who? or What? I see Pierre. Je vois Pierre. Who do I see? Pierre. I'm eating the bread Je mange le pain. What am I eating? - Bread.

Direct object pronouns are the words that replace the direct object, so that we don't say things like –"Marie was at the bank today. When I saw Marie I smiled." It's much more natural to say –"Marie was at the bank today. When I saw her I smiled."

Direct object pronouns replace a noun that is not the subject of the verb. singular plural me / m’ te/ t’ le / l’ la / l’ nous vous les - me - you - him / it (masc.) - her / it (fem.) - us - you - them

Direct pronouns come in front of the verb, unlike in English : Je le prends.I’ll take it. Je peux vous aider ? Can I help you ? Le and la are shortened to l’ in front of a vowel or a silent h : Mon petit frère a deux ans. Je l’adore ! My little brother is two. I love him !

Partner A asks the question and partner B answers using a direct pronoun. 1. Tu comprends le chinois ? Non, je ne le comprends pas  2. Tu as acheté ton magazine de foot ? Oui, je l’ ai acheté. 3. Tu nous retrouves devant le cinéma ? Oui, je vous retrouve devant le cinéma.

4. Tu aimes les bonbons ? Oui, je les adore !!!!!! 5. Tu connais Sophie Emerson ? Oui, je la connais 6. Tu parles l’ espagnol ? Non, je ne le parle pas …. mais j’aimerais apprendre à le parler ! 7. Tu as acheté mes CDs ? Oui, je les ai achetés.

Indirect object pronouns : me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur

Indirect object pronouns are used to replace a noun that would be introduced with the preposition à. singular plural me / m’ te/ t’ lui nous vous leur - (to) me - (to) you - (to) him/her/it - (to) us - (to) you - (to) them

1. Je donne du café à mon père.  Je lui donne du café. 2. Je parle à Danielle.  Je lui parle. 3. Je donne des bonbons à mes copains.  Je leur donne des bonbons. 4. Eammon parle à Michael. Il lui parle.

Indirect object pronouns : en = of it / them ; y = there

en Use en to avoid repeating a noun that is introduced with du, de la, de l’ or des 1. Tu as des chiens ? en Oui, j’en ai trois. 2.Tu manges de la viande ? en Oui, j’en mange. en Non, je n’en mange pas ! en Non, je n’en ai pas. 3. Tu manges beaucoup de bonbons ? en Oh oui ! J’en mange trop !

y y usually means “there”. y You can use y to avoid repeating the same place : 1.Tu vas à Paris ? y Oui, j’ y vais demain. 2. Comment vas-tu au collège ? y J’y vais à pied /en voiture /en bus.
