Engineers Without Borders CCNY Chapter Project in Milla Tres, Honduras August 2012

What is EWB? Engineers Without Borders is a non-profit national organization founded in 2000 With 350 projects in over 45 developing countries It comprises of 250 University and professional chapters that provide service to communities in need of basic engineering infrastructure, such as water distribution and sanitation projects. EWB-USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders.

Previous Projects First Project-EWB-CCNY first traveled to Honduras to implement a small scale water distribution system in La Nueva Suiza. Second Project- In addition to a water tank and distribution system, we added latrines on our second project, in Las Chicas. Third Project - Back in La Nueva Suiza, we built ventilation systems for our third project.

Milla Tres, Honduras Water Distribution System Town Details 150 homes Population of 1050 Some electricity Some indoor plumbing and septic tanks Earthquake Water source disrupted by earthquake in 2009 No water in 45 homes in dry season

Milla Tres – Current System A 3500 gallon tank is currently in use, but practically empty during the dry season (6 months). The current distribution system provides limited water for short periods of time.

Milla Tres – Community Assessment Surveys were taken in over half of the households that will be served by the new system. Male and female focus groups revealed more detailed information about the community’s health and hardships of obtaining water. Community expressed many health concerns that they believe are linked to their current water system. A short presentation to the entire community clarified the role that EWB will play in the project. Community members are enthusiastic about the new water system.

Milla Tres – Planned System Install a retention dam across the source approximately 2 kilometers from the town. Build a conduction line from the source to the tank. Build a new 7,000 gallon water storage tank at a higher elevation. Connect the new storage tank to the current distribution line.
