Ancestral Quest’s Synchronization with nFS

Ancestral Quest relation to PAF Prior to summer of 1999 PAF was a DOS Program Incline Software (writers of Ancestral Quest) gave a copy of their source code to the LDS Church PAF 4 and PAF 5 are slightly modified older versions of Ancestral Quest Most LDS users shifted to using PAF 4 and PAF 5 Ancestral Quest is a new.FamilySearch.org certified software which overlays PAF 5.2, plus more

Why use Ancestral Quest Uses your existing PAF data base Is very similar to PAF so you don’t have to learn a new program Organize your nFS pedigree directly from your PAF file You can do anything in Ancestral Quest that you can do in newFamilySearch, except Uncombine records and see the names of the people who are also working on your line. Jump directly to your ancestor in newFamilySearch Especially important when you have a large data base with a lot of collateral lines (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd cousins, aunts and uncles and their descendants, etc. Use the advanced focus filter features with new FamilySearch. Examples: –1. Choosing people/families to do temple ordinances –2. Look up temple ordinance information

After downloading Ancestral Quest, you can open Ancestral Quest two ways – from the icon on the desktop or from the Tools menu in PAF by clicking on the Ancestral Quest line.

Click on the FamilySearch Tab Notice how the Family Page looks very much like the PAF Family Page The drop down menu contains a number of things that you can do. Link (Sync) connects an individual with newFamilySearch. This is done by finding and then storing the newFamilySearch Id. Number in your PAF data base.

Start by linking yourself. Click on the Link (Sync) Me line. Generally this is used only to link yourself.

This window opens. Type in your regular newFamilySearch username and password and click the OK button. If you do not have a nFS account or have forgotten your Password you can use these butonns.

This window opens in a few seconds. Click on the Find Your Record Button

Review the RIN number in this window. It will be the RIN number that was highlighted in Ancestral Quest. Change to your RIN if necessary. Click on the Ok button.

This window will open. Review the information, then click the ‘Link Your Record’ button if the information is correct.

This window opens. Review the information and click the Save button. The right column is nFS info, the left column is what is in your PAF data base.

After opening the Edit Individual page, notice the newFamilySearch Id. Number.

Open the Name List tab, notice that the nFS Id numbers are listed in a separate column. You do not have to link every one in your data base at the same time, you can link them according to your needs.

You can open the following Review Screen of an individual by clicking on either the Review Individual line in the drop down menu, or the FamilySearch icon on the person’s name line. The Review screen is used frequently as you will see as we go through this presentation. The nFS icon is colored in if the individual has been linked.

Left side of the screen shows what’s in your PAF data base. Right side of the page shows what’s in newFamilySearch data base. From this screen you can exchange information between PAF and nFS by clicking on the open box beside the information that you want to exchange.

You can synchronize the rest of the family

John King has been linked to nFS. Lets link the rest of the family. This can be done by clicking on the newFamilySearch icon. This will open up the Review individual screen. Notice the outline of the nFS icon.

Click on the Spouses and Children button

There are two wives found for John King. One named Elizabeth and one named Mrs. Elizabeth King. Before we combine these wives, we need to see more information about each. Click on the + in the box at the left of each line.

Each wife was born in 1813 Review of the 3 children indicate they are the same as in my PAF file Clicking on the blue name opened this window. After review, I decided the two wives are the same person and Horace was a child that I didn’t have in my PAF file, so I clicked on the Combined Spouses button.

Highlighting each line followed by clicking the Select button, this places a ‘+’ mark in the Combine column

Now click on the Combine button

This window opens, review and then click on the Yes button.

Now click the Close button

This window opens again, but only one wife is now showing. Click on the + box

You must link (sync) the parents before you can link the children. Clicking on the open box by Elizabeth will open this window. Click the Link (sync) box, then click the OK button.

A green chain link appears beside Elizabeth’s name. Clicking on the open box by James will open this box. Mark this bulls-eye, then click the OK button

This box will open. Mark both open boxes then click the OK button

Continue clicking on the open boxes by each child's name. After highlighting the appropriate child, click on the two open boxes and then click the OK button. Notice that a green chain link is now beside each name, ready to be linked.

You can add Horace to this family in your PAF file by clicking on the open box, marking the bulls-eye, and clicking on the OK button. This will also link Horace to nFS.

When you click the Process button, all the actions listed in green, will occur. Elizabeth and her four children will be linked and Horace will be add to your PAF file.

This window opens and allows you to review the actions that will take place. Click on the Commit button to complete the process.

This window opens. Marking the Manually Sync bulls-eye will allow you to exchange information between nFS and your PAF data base. Click on the Proceed button.

This window will open. You can click on any open boxes on either side of the page and when you click the Save button the information beside the open box will be exchanged. Information on the right will be sent to your PAF file, information on the left will be sent to nFS

This page will open after each individual has been processed individually. Now notice that everyone has a colored in nFS icon and that Horace is now listed as a child in this family.

You can synchronize a group of people

Go the the Family Search drop down window and highlight the Link (Sync) Upload Groups line. Click on the highlighted line.

This window opens. Now click on the Select button.

This window opens. Now click on this drop down window and select the All line and then click on the Select button.

Everyone in your PAF data base has now been selected. Now click on the Define button.

This window opens. The group of people I want to Link is from RIN number 1100 to 1110, so I highlight the RIN number and click on the > button.

This window opens and I fill in the ‘From’ and ‘To’ blanks and click the OK button.

Review this information and click on the OK button.

11 people have been selected. Now click on the OK button

This window opens. Click on the Matching button. Watch as the blue line fills in. Notice that 10 people have been Positively matched, and one Not Matched. Now click on the View button to the right of the Positive Match.

This window opens. Highlight each individual one at a time and click on the Preview button.

This window opens. Now click on the people that nFS found one at a time.

After reviewing the information – PAF info to the left, NFS info to the right, and clicking on the ‘Mark as Same’ button a + mark is placed by the individual. Now click the Sync button.

This window opens. Manually Sync bulls-eye allows you to exchange info between PAF and nFS. The Link Only bulls eye will only link the individual with nFS

This window opens where you can exchange information between your PAF info and nFS. I want to replace this earlier ordinance date in my PAF file. Clicking on this open box will -

Open this window. Marking the bulls-eye will indicate the action described when you click on the OK button.

Note the arrow in the green box. This action will be excited when the Save button is clicked.

Note the “Done’ recorded on the first line. Now proceed to the next line and click on the Preview button.

5 records have been identified in nFS as possible matches with a score indicated beside the name. Clicking on the line will open up the nFS information and allow you to compare it with your PAF information.

After comparing the info, I decided that they were the same person, so clicked on the ‘Mark as Same button. ‘+’ mark appears

After reviewing each line, click on the Sync button

This window opens. Now click on the Proceed button

I want to replace my PAF data with what is in nFS I want to replace my Unofficial PAF Bapismal info with this data Now click OK button

These two items from nFS will replace my PAF data when the Save button is clicked

This page shows that I believe 4 of the 6 records refer to the same Ulrich Gerber. The Sync button has changed to ‘Combine’. Clicking this button will start the combining process of these records.

Review this window and then click the Yes button. This will complete the combining process.

Now you can Synchronize the people you have combined with your PAF individual

Clicking the Proceed button will allow you exchange information between your PAF data and nFS.

No exchange of info was desired so click on the Save button.

Now that all 10 people have been Linked to nFS, click on the Close button

Now click on the View button of the 1 ‘Not Matched’ person

Review the information and click on the OK button

With the first line highlighted, click on the Search button

This page opens. Click on Search button. If you know the FS PID or AFN number you can enter those numbers after clicking on the appropriate bulls-eye.

A list of possible matches are now listed. Clicking on each line will open up the info about this person that nFS has. You can now determine if he is your person. If it is click on ‘Mark as Same’ button

After reviewing all the people, you click on the Sync or Combine button

Again this window opens. Click on the ‘Proceed’ button

The compare and exchange of information window opens. I want to replace my PAF Baptism and Endowment info with that in nFS. Click OK button

The information to the right of the arrow in the green box will replace the information I have in my PAF data when I click the Save button.

This window will now open. It show that Jakob Reber has been Linked. Now click on the Close button

Reviewing Jakob Reber’s Edit Individual window show that the date of birth, as well as the ordinance dates have been transferred in to my PAF data base

Add information to newFamilySearch from your PAF data

Notice everyone in this family has be linked to nFS except Magdalena.

With Magdalena highlighted in blue, open up the FamilySearch drop down menu and click on the Link (Sync) Upload Individual line.

This window opens. After reviewing each individual, no matches were found in nFS. Now click on the Add to FS button

This window opens. Review the information and then click on the Search button

This window opens. After reviewing all 42 possible matches, I determined that my Magdalena was not found in nFS. So by clicking on the Add to FS button her information will be added to nFS

This window opens. Review and click on the OK button

Now you can see that Magdalena Gertsch has been linked to nFS.

Searching Possible Duplicates Using Ancestral Quest

Now lets check for possible duplicates in nFS for Anna Gertsch. Click on the nFS icon.

The ‘Review’ screen opens. Now click on the ‘Check for Dups on FamilySearch’ button

This screen opens. Now click on this line.

You can now compare your PAF info (left side) with nFS data (Right side). Since I know that there are many Anna Gertsch’s christened in Lauterbrunnen, I choose not to combine these two people. I click on the ‘Mark as Different’ button, then on the ‘Close’ button.

Now close this review window.

Finding/Adding an unknown spouse in nFS who is known in your PAF file.

Both Johannes and Anna have been linked to individuals in nFS

Opening up the review screen of Johannes shows this information. Now click on the ‘Spouses Children’ button.

The left side (PAF data) shows a family with Anna Feuz. The right side (nFS data) shows no spouse connected in nFS. Now click on the ‘+’ mark.

This window opens. Clicking on the open box will result in an arrow in a green box and Anna Feuz (1827-) ID: KZ47-F&B in left box. Then click on the ‘Process’ Button.

This window opens, now click on the ‘Commit’ button

This window returns. Now click on the nFS icon.

Click on the ‘Spouses Children’ button.

This window opens again. This time showing the linked family of Anna Feuz.

Some of the other things you can do from Ancestral Quest are: 1. Add information such as notes and sources to nFS 2. Delete information you have contributed to nFS 3. Access the nFS Ordinance Reservation and Tracking system 4. Dispute items in nFS

Ordinance Reservation and Tacking System in Ancestral Quest

Open the FamilySearch drop now window. Click on the highlighted ‘Ordinance and Tracking System’ line.

This window opens. This button allows you to enable or disable the Temple Mode icons. The nFS temple ordinance status icon will be shown by each individual if the ‘Enable’ button is clicked Click this button will allow you to reserve Odinances in nFS Clicking this button will allow access to individuals that you already have put in your Ancestral Quest Reservation System

Clicking on the Reserve Ordinances button opens this window. Notice I have already added the individuals listed above to my AQ Reserve list. These names have not yet been added to my nFS reserved list.

These codes list the ordinance status for each individual in nFS and are used in these boxes. Open box means Ready, ‘X’ means Completed, etc.

This button allows you to add individuals to this list.

This window opens. I want to add just one individual. But I could choose to add groups of individuals up to everyone who is qualified in my PAF data base.

This window opens. I have filled in the RIN # of the individual I want to add to my reserved list. Now click the OK button

This window opens. Noticed I have add Anna Elise Krebs to the list

I can Edit the highlighted individual by clicking this button

This Edit Individual window opens and you can make changes.

You can review the highlighted person in nFS

The normal Review and Synchronize Screen opens

Clicking this button opens a screen where you can reserve ordinances directly in nFS for the person that is highlighted in you list.

Click on open box and then click on the ‘Save’ button

With this button you can check for Duplicates of the highlighted individual in nFS. Be sure you check for duplicates before reserving the ordinances in nFS.

As stated in this window, no duplicates were found for Kaj Hansen. Click on the OK button.

This search window opens. Notice how similar this search window is to the one found in nFS. Click on the Search button.

39 people were found that might be matches. After reviewing, no duplicates were found. Click on the Close button.

This button is used to Reserve needed ordinances in the nFS system. If the individual has already been checked for possible duplicates, the following window will open.

Check the open box and then click the Reserve button This window indicates that you will be responsible to see that the ordinance is completed. If you want the Temple to do the ordinance click on the down arrow and choose the word Temple

If you try to reserve an individual that you have not checked for duplicates in nFS, the following window will open.

Read the information in this window and then click the ‘Yes’ button. Remember, always check for possible duplicates before you reserve ordinances for and individual. This will prevent you from doing unnecessary ordinances.

After reviewing these three names that were found in nFS, none were duplicate individuals. Continue searching by clicking on the Search button.

This window opens, continue by clicking on the Search button

After reviewing all 27 individuals and finding none are duplicates, continue by clicking on the Close button

This window opens. I have checked the open boxes for each ordinance, now click on the ‘Reserve’ button.

This window opens. After reviewing this page and reading Church Policies and checked the Church Policies box, I click on the ‘Continue’ button

This window again opens. Notice that Anna Maria has an X in the ‘Ready’ column. This indicates that she as been reserved in nFS.

Show how to create FOR sheet I now want to create a FOR for the selected people on this page. Notice that all the people who have an ‘X’ in the Selected column also have an ‘X’ in the Ready column. The X in the Ready column indicates that they have already been Reserved in nFS. Click on the Create FOR button.

This window opens and shows a summary of what will be printed on the FOR. Click on the ‘Create FOR’ button

This window opens. Notice that this window looks like the FOR window you print in nFS.

You can link all individuals on this page who have not been synchronize with nFS by clicking on the ‘Group Link’ Button. You can remove any highlighted individual on this page by clicking on the ‘Remove’ button.

You can jump directly into nFS search from Ancestral Quest by highlighting the individual on the ‘Pedigree’, ‘Family’ or ‘Name List’ pages and then clicking on ‘View Person in FamilySearch’ line.

This window opens and you will have to sign in to nFS as usual.

This page opens directly to Robert King.
