Rubin was born as ''Reuven Zelicovici'' in Galaţi, and studied art in Paris. In 1912 he immigrated to Ottoman Empire-ruled Palestine, and attempted to study Bezalel Academy of Art and Design He found himself, however, at odds with the artistic views of the academy's teachers and returned to Paris and then to Romania, where he lived between Between 1920 and 1922 he lived in New York City. There, he met Alfred Stieglitz who supported him and helped him present his first one-man show at Anderson Gallery in By 1922, Rubin returned to Palestine, attempting to create a new, original, 'Land of Israel|EretzIsraeli'' style. Recurring themes in his work were the Palestinian/Israeli landscape, its folklore and population. ראובן רובין ראובן רובין נולד ברומניה ולמד ציור בפריס. בשנת 1912 עלה לישראל ולמד שנה אחת בבצאלל. רובין לא אהב את התפיסה שהייתה נהוגה בבצלאל ולכן, חזר לפריס. בשנים זכה למוניטין רב בעיר. בין השנים עבר רובין לארצות הברית, שם נערכה לו תערוכת יחיד בניויורק. בשנת 1922 חוזר רובין לישראל עם תפיסה אמנותית שדוגלת בהשתחררות מהעבר ועיסוק בהווה. בשנת 1924 היה רובין לצייר הארצישראלי הראשון אשר הציג בתערוכת יחיד את ציוריו במגדל דוד שבירושלים. הוא בלט מכל הציירים אשר ניסו ליצור סגנון ארצישראלי ייחודי. הירבה לצייר את נופי הארץ ובפרט את נופי ירושלים והגליל. כמו כן תכנן את התפאורות לתיאטרון הבימה ולעוד תיאטרונים בתל אביב. בשנים היה לשגריר הראשון של ישראל ברומניה. ראובן רובין נהג לחתום על ציוריו בשם "ראובן". ראובן רובין זכה בפרס דיזנגוף בשנת 1964, ובפרס ישראל בשנת 1973.
