How can I maximise my marks? The maximum mark for the exam paper is usually about 125 You will have 2 hours to do the paper, so you must remember that you should spend about a minute per mark. So if a question is worth 10 marks you need to spend about 10 minutes on it (the paper normally advises you how long you should spend on each section). Make sure you use good English. Read the questions carefully. Key words you need to note are often highlighted in bold. Be specific: don’t say knife, say craft knife! Check your answers. Keep working right to the end. You can always improve your drawing, colouring and shading. Have all the right equipment and use it! (Normally pencils, coloured pencils, rulers, erasers and sharpeners are supplied if you don’t have your own). If you don’t understand something, or don’t know the meaning of a word, put your hand up and ask. You never know, you might get an answer. Don’t just sit there giving up! So, what is likely to be in the paper? Your questions are likely to be a mixture of: Thinking and sketching ideas for Greeting and Invitation cards. Most likely Prom invitations and birthday cards. Developing these ideas. Presenting a final solution - A fully rendered (shaded & coloured) drawing. Evaluation of your idea(s). Good and bad points. The Research Context this year is: Paper Engineering The Design Theme is: Greeting and Invitation Cards Revise by going to Research Greeting Card imagery, simple pop-up mechanisms & environmental issues. Question 1: (Usually worth marks) This is usually a nice easy question to settle you down. Normally it is a market research question about representing data. You just have to convert information into a bar, pie or pictograph chart. Do exactly what it says (even if it seems very simple) and you will be off to a winning start! Question 2: (Usually worth 9 marks) This question is often about writing a specification. You will be told what you are about to design and will be given a specification for it (specific points your design ideas must have). It will usually give you 4 specific points. You will then be asked to add extra specific points (usually 3). It is likely you will then be asked to give reasons why your points are important. The examiner will have a tick list to award points for doing this - simple isn’t it? When you design your ideas over the next couple of questions, you must make sure you have included all the points from the specification (the 4 points supplied and your extra 3). Question 3: (Usually worth marks) This question is usually about generating ideas. One of the normal tasks within this question is to design the surface graphics for a product, in this case, this year, it will probably be a birthday card or prom invitation. You will probably be given a word like ‘Happy Birthday’ for the greeting card and will be asked to style it in a suitable way. You may be asked to design a colour theme to match. Remember the design theme is images to do with parties and events The bright colours spring to mind! You must try out a number of sketches and ideas, annotating (adding notes) and evaluating them against the specification. Question 3: Designing - Top Tips: Marks will be awarded as follows: Effective use of specification. Make sure your ideas have all the specific points included (6 Marks). Quality of sketching: draw lightly in pencil first, then use colour and fine liners, etc. Be big and bold using the whole drawing area (5 Marks). Indication of colour: colour really brings a sketch to life. Use colour theory (e.g. complementary red and green) and say why you have chosen specific colours (3 Marks). Clear, reasoned evaluation of ideas. You must annotate (add notes) and evaluate your ideas. Use the specification to do this (3 Marks). Quality of development of ideas. Question 4: (Usually worth 18 marks) This is usually where you develop your ideas. You will have to take the best parts of your ideas and develop them into a final solution as a presentation drawing. Do not just repeat one idea from question 3! Presentation of Final Design - Top Tips: Marks will be awarded for: Use of the specification (remember that tick list to make sure you have done this. Each point normally gets one mark) (6 Marks). Quality of Drawing: Use sharp pencils and make good use of colour, rulers, fine liners, etc. (4 Marks). Suitable Layout: Plan & layout your design neatly. Do it faintly to start with, so mistakes can be rubbed out easily. Do not squash up your design & try to get it balanced & in proportion (4 Marks). Quality of Colouring: Use good colouring. Use a ruler against a line to be neat. Get depth of colour, and use gradients from light through medium to dark (4 Marks). Question 4 continued: (Usually worth 10 marks) This is normally a question about evaluating. You will probably be asked to evaluate your own design, or be asked to evaluate an existing design and suggest how it could be improved. Remember, if you have to evaluate your designs you must compare your designs to the specification (including your own points) and say how you could improve things. Revise thoroughly: Third Angle Orthographic projection, Isometric, 1 & 2 point perspective, dimensions using British standards conventions, scale, rendering techniques & drawing nets correctly. Q. 6 is normally about MATERIALS. Revise thoroughly: Paper, board, plastics, printing inks and smart materials. Q. 7 is normally about INDUSTRIAL PRACTICES. Revise thoroughly: Printing processes, finishes, CAD/CAM, plastic processes like injection moulding, vacuum forming, etc. Revise production methods: one-off, batch, mass & continuous. Q. 8 is normally about SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Revise thoroughly: Recycling, packaging symbols & all social & environmental issues for graphic products. Look at aerosol labelling and symbols.
