European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA Trilateral Meeting Collection targets 16 June 2011 Washington

European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA 2  25% after 4 years is ambitious but achievable  45% after 8 years is not achievable, based on the current experience of battery collection in certain Member States  Target after 8 years should be set on the basis of that achieved in the 25 Member States after 4 years Collection targets EPBA position 2005

European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA 3  The level of the target should be realistic and achievable in the timeframe.  The targets should take account of the experience in those Member States that have been collecting batteries for a number of years.  It should be recognised that those Member States that do not have a history of battery collection would require a longer time to develop and set up an appropriate infrastructure and to educate the population than those that do. Collection targets

European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA 4 Collection targets 45% 25%

European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA 5  Out of 27, Not all Member States will be able to reach the 25% collection target  Even less Member States will reach 45%  This will even be a challenge for countries where the compliance schemes have a lot of experience Collection targets

European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA 6 Key-concerns to reach the targets: -level of consumer awareness -geography -population density -Waste infrastructure Collection targets

European Portable Battery AssociationEPBA EPBA 7 Other elements: -Producers cannot oblige consumer to bring back waste batteries -Hoarding of small EEE with incorporated batteries -Increase in internet sales e.g. mobile phones -Impact of Li-Ion batteries used in appliances -Limited amount of batteries coming from WEEE schemes -Incomplete data Collection targets
