788.11j Wireless Sensor Networks

2 1. What is a mote? A mote network? A mote fabric?  © 1980 (tending to 1990) PC providing cloud experience  running on two AA batteries for 5 years  platform for next generation of computing 2. What are central challenges for this class of computing?  low cost, low power yet accurate  manageability, programmability, deployability at scale What is this course about?

3 What are the research themes this quarter? Node and network energy efficiency  In MAC  In new mote hardware (scaling down) architectures  In hybrid mote-smartphone (scaling up) architectures Network architecture  App centricity (vertical standards) vs. horizontal standards  How can a WSN handle app centricity  can 2 MACs coexist? can 2 networks exist? on the same node? Physical layer exploitation  Smarter physical layers can deal better with interference and security, but can motes be SDRs?

4 Themes of this course Delay tolerance  Especially when connectivity is scarce  Mobility increases capacity, at the cost of delay  What happens to capacity when delay is constrained  What happens to exploitation when mobility is predictable Sensing complex things in complex environments  Machine learning  In the field calibration Applications  Control apps for energy conservation  Safe apps for energy conservation
