Of Mice and Men Skylar Burningham

John Steinbeck Born February 27, 1902 Died December 20, 1968

Characters George - A small, wiry, quick-witted man who travels with, and cares for Lennie. Lennie - A large, lumbering, childlike migrant worker. Due to his mild mental disability, he completely depends upon George, his friend and traveling companion, for guidance and protection. The Boss - The stocky, well-dressed man in charge of the ranch

Characters Candy - An aging ranch handyman, Candy lost his hand in an accident and worries about his future on the ranch. Curley’s wife - The only female character in the novel, Curley’s wife is never given a name and is only mentioned in reference to her husband. Crooks - Crooks, the black stable-hand, gets his name from his crooked back Curley - The boss’s son, Curley wears high-heeled boots to distinguish himself from the field hands

Protagonist George- Kind-hearted ranch hand who is concerned about his friend Lennie and watches out for him

Antagonist Lennie- Accidentally kills Curley's wife.

My Favorite Lennie. He is very nice, doesn’t really know what bad things are.

Least Favorite George. He is very rude to Lennie. He calls him stupid, which is discrimination, and always yells at him.

Exposition Lennie and George hope to one day attain their shared dream of settling down on their own piece of land.

Rising Action Lennie kills his pet mouse, and a puppy, by stroking them too roughly.

Climax Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife in the barn

Falling Action Curley and the men around the ranch go and search for Lennie to kill him for killing Curley’s wife.

Resolution when George finds Lennie in the clearing and, while retelling the story of life on their farm, shoots him in the back of the head, saving him from certain punishment for the death of Curly's wife

Setting ( TIME ) · 1930s ( PLACE ) · South of Soledad, California

Theme Idealism vs. Reality

Rating 8 This book was well written. It took a while to get into, but after the first chapter about, it started to get good.

Poem elinor the clock ticks so loudly against the cold air, dense and collecting like dust on the windowsill. everything is white and feels surreal, tasting of medical charts or thermometers slipped under ribcages without prior consent. barnacles line her fingers, decorating soft skin with saltwater traces and dimpled pinprick marks. the sensation tricks her into believing she is an aquatic life-form, and she fights against oxygen, begging for water, not realizing the film crowding her eyes. soft reassurance frightens her ghouls away, locking them tight within wide-ruled lines and black ink. but tomorrow she will fog over again, always the same routine. her mind has so long been twisted, they fear they will never manage to untangle it
