The Compassionate Savior SS Lesson 6 for August 9, 2008

Introduction What other words can we use for the word compassionate? Sympathetic, concerned, kindhearted and considerate. The memory verse for this week, mentions, to whom, Jesus, was compassionate. “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew 9:36 “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew 9:36

Jesus ever ministered to the needs of the people

His method of ministering to people in crowds and individually should be the model for our witness today. His deepest yearning was to reach the masses

Sunday Reaching the Masses Sunday Reaching the Masses The bible in different texts puts it this way: Matthew 4:25 Great multitudes followed Him--from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan. Luke 6:17 …a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon…

Mark 5:27 “…she came behind Him in the crowd.” Matthew 13:2 And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. Mark 6:15 “..a great many of the Jews “

So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him! John 12:19 Why did the whole world want to go after him? Because he had a personal touch..Monday Why did the whole world want to go after him? Because he had a personal touch..Monday

Monday The Personal Touch Monday The Personal Touch Luke 8:1 …He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God… Mark 1:22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Mark 12:37 The large crowd listened to him with delight.

John 3:1,2 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night… In chapter 3 we see the personal touch that Jesus had with Nicodemus, who personally made an appointment to see him in evening hours. We see this personal touch in John chapters 3 and 4

In John 3:3,5 you see Jesus constantly telling Nicodemus that what He is saying is the truth. Telling the truth to someone, is a personal touch Verse 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth,… Verse 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth,…

Then in John 3:10 Jesus has the friendly, personal boldness to admonish Nicodemus. "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. One of the most personal subject one can talk about is love, and we see that, in the ever so famous verse, John 3:16

John 4:7-26. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans) Another personal and lovely story, found in John 4, is when, Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman The conversation is so lovely. I have selected practically the whole story.

Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true." "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."

Juan 4: Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers. John 4:39-42 Another personal and compassionate trait of Jesus was his spirit of forgiveness…Tuesday

John 8:10, 11 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." Tuesday Forgiveness Tuesday Forgiveness Specific places in the bible where we find the goodness of a forgiving spirit are:

Luke 23:34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots. Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you Luke 11:4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation Just as God taught us when He was here with us...Wednesday

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Wednesday God With Us Another compassionate trait of Jesus was that He revealed himself in flesh and blood. Matthew 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

When his teachings were too difficult to perceive he had the thoughtfulness of speaking in stories, named parables

Luke 15:8-10 "Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?." Thursday Speaking in Parables Thursday Speaking in Parables

Mark 4:26-29 And He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, "and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. Matthew 13:33

Another parable He spoke to them: "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened."

Matthew 18:12-14 "What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?

Mark 13:28-32 "Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near

Matthew 13:45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls,

In Christ is the tenderness of the shepherd, the affection of the parent, and the matchless grace of the compassionate Saviour. His blessings He presents in the most alluring terms. He is not content merely to announce these blessings; He presents them in the most attractive way, to excite a desire to possess them. So His servants are to present the riches of the glory of the unspeakable Gift. Conclusion

The wonderful love of Christ will melt and subdue hearts, when the mere reiteration of doctrines would accomplish nothing. "Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God." "O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!... He shall feed His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom." Isa. 40:1, Conclusion

Tell the people of Him who is "the Chiefest among ten thousand," and the One "altogether lovely." The Song of Solomon 5:10, 16. Words alone cannot tell it. Let it be reflected in the character and manifested in the life. Christ is sitting for His portrait in every disciple. Every one God has predestinated to be "conformed to the image of His Son." Rom. 8:29. Conclusion

In every one Christ's long-suffering love, His holiness, meekness, mercy, (compassion) and truth are to be manifested to the world. DA 826 In every one Christ's long-suffering love, His holiness, meekness, mercy, (compassion) and truth are to be manifested to the world. DA 826 Conclusion

Lesson 7 The Apostle John who said: "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth" 3 John 4, next week’s memory verse. One of Jesus most loving apostle was John This next week we will study about him. May God bless you abundantly!!
