Backwards Design Approach  Lesson plans will be designed with the end goal as our starting point  Assessments will attempt to measure depth of knowledge rather than ability to memorize  “I can …” statements will be developed to target goals and learning objectives for students  Our goal is to have students be able to teach us,  We learn 10% of what we read,  … 50% of what we see and hear,  …90% of what we teach others.

Language Arts/Social Studies  The integration of both subjects will create a majority of the focus topics, themes, and class lessons throughout the year.  Informational and non-fiction text will be heavily used to identify and create:  Purpose  Comprehension  Connections and Applications  Text to text  Text to self

Literature in the class  Throughout the year we will read novels as a class and in groups.  Novels will be grade level appropriate and have literacy importance  They will be used to  identify and discuss elements of writing  develop comprehension skills  develop thinking strategies  develop communication skills

Content Based Reading  Informational and non-fiction text will be heavily used to identify and create:  Purpose “ Why are we learning this”?  Comprehension “What does it all mean”?  Connections and Applications- “How is this relevant to my life?”  Text to text  Text to self  Text to world

A.R.  AR will not be used as a grade, however we do have rewards for those that meet their quarterly goals, through the library.  Parents can track their children’s AR progress through the Home Connect website.  Home Connect can be accessed through the district’s website.

Social Studies  Social studies will be content based  Informational and nonfiction text   Themes will include:  US Government  Arizona  Maps  Early civilizations  Economics  Expansion of the U.S.  WWII

Writing Notebook  Students will keep a writing notebook to be used throughout the year.  The notebook will remain at school and be used as a grade:  Comprehension of lessons, from their entries  Use of vocabulary  Understanding of academic language  Organization and accountability to keep up to date

Homework  All homework will be directly related and support the work done in class.  Homework will serve a purpose, not generate busy work.  Homework will typically be an opportunity to create connections to our learning.  At the end of each quarter the students will create a project that will incorporate all the goals and objectives covered throughout the quarter.  Student will have at least two weeks to complete these projects,  We hope that significant time, effort, and work will be put into these projects to show comprehension and mastery of skills.

 4 th Grade Declaration of Expectations  Reflection Papers  Agendas are to be signed each night. It also a place for communication. Write us notes if needed! Classroom Climate

 In grade four, your child will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve word problems, including problems involving measurement of volume, mass, and time.  Students will continue to build their understanding of fractions—creating equal fractions, comparing the size of fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, and multiplying fractions by whole numbers.  They will also start to understand the relationship between fractions and decimals. Mrs. Jonovich’s Math Musts  Students MUST show work or prove their answers.  Students MUST be able to explain their thinking.  Students MUST be able to apply the math skills we’re learning in class to real life problems.  Students MUST memorize their basic facts for addition/subtraction & multiplication/division.  Students MUST do their work in pencil.

Math & Science Homework  Homework = Practice (It is not graded)  Allows students to practice the skills we are working on without the fear of being penalized if something is wrong.  Homework is always written in the agenda to avoid confusion with other papers that were gone over in class.  Enables students to become more comfortable with targeted skills as they work independently.  Gives students an opportunity to realize when they need more help.  We will usually go over homework the next day as a warm up to the new lesson and to clarify before we move on.

Math & Science Homework  May be assigned nightly Monday-Thursday, depending on where we are in a lesson/unit.  Is always posted on the board in my classroom  Should be written in students’ agendas (I provide time for this in class.)
